I second the Costa Brava: As a kid we had our family holiday every year in Camping Aquarius from 1979 to 1990, now that I have kids of my own we are about to go back again for the second time. Amazingly last year, we met up with childhood friends (now grown up) who also go back every year with their own kids.

The site is on the beach on the bay of Rosas - undoubtedly one of the finest beached anywhere in Europe. The is no mass tourisme as the site is in a national park - you don't need to go far to find the big tourist attractions if you should wish to do so! The beaches are very uncrowded as the only access is through the campsites, the sea is shallow and warm - perfect for children and the beach is fine golden sand. Along side the beach is a cycle track, running for 2 or 3 miles (really only suitable for mountain bikes as it is made of packed sand)

Camping Aquarius is lovely - It is a small site, which is totally safe, we were happy to let our children 5, 7 and 10 (last year) wonder around freely. There tend to be a handful of British kids, however, they all seem to get on really well with the Dutch and German children as well. The site has fantastic toilet and washing facilities, however, there is no pool or slides - who needs them with such a nice beach on the doorstep. In my experience, slides are rare in Spanish sites. There is an adequate shop and nice restaurant

The site is about 1 mile from St Pedro Pescadore, a really nice fishing / farming village, where you can get everything that you need. As the area is a national park, with lots of fruit farming, you will never find better fresh fruit and veg from the many local farm shops

If you like to get out and about there is also lots to do - the Pyranese mountains (less than 10km away) are stunning, the roman ruins at ampurias are some of the best in the world 5km, the Dali museum in Figueras 10km, lots of lovely Spanish towns and villages, Cadaques, Rosas, Figueras, Escala are all within 30 mins drive. France is less than an hour away, Barcelona is 1 1/2 hours away

we are going on 14 August for 2 weeks

You had me there Matt, until the "no pool". What a shame as it looks like a lovely site, but we really need a pool.

I almost forgot about the Rosas area Matt- it is truly lovely.  All down the costa brava coast is lovely (i would miss out Estartit tho, sorry!) until you get to the big resorts.  I'm almost tempted to go back and that site you mentioned sounds great (I don't need slides) - another dose of Salvador Dali wouldn't do me any harm LOL.  Not possible at the moment though because we take the dog now and as I recall not a particulalrly dog-friendly area (regarding beaches etc)

If you need a pool, Nautic Almata is about 1 mile down the beach, and is also a lovely site - I prefer Aquarius, however, We stayed at Nautic Almata 3 years ago and it was also very nice, it has a number of nice pools and is very close to the village, another advantage is that it is really close to the wild flamingoes (I am not joking) so you can go on a nature ramble to see them. Las Dunas, 1 mile down the beach in the opposite direction is also really nice, however, it is a much larger campsite - we stayed here 7 years ago, in a mobile home and it was a really nice holiday as well. The disadvantage of Las Dunas is that it is too far to walk to St Pedro Pescadore, other than that it is a great site. They have re-built the pool since I was last there. Do a google search to see all of the sites

They have an area of the site which is reserved for people with Dogs. Not sure about dogs on the beach, I don't recal any signs saying that dogs are not allowed.

I agree with your comments about estartit, there are pockets of nightmare locations - between Rosas and St Pedro (just past the northern edge of the national park is horrible, South of Escala (I think that this is heading towards Estartit) is also pretty grim
