One of the reasons the Toll roads in France make for a very clear run, is no doubt many other folk are using the ordinary roads, unlike the UK were every man and his dog uses the Motorways, a good example is the M6 Toll, always clear as a bell, if I was towing a caravan through France, then it would be the none toll route for me, just a case of factoring the extra time, personaly though I like using the Autoroutes, and the £100 that it adds to my holiday is one of the costs I factor in, have even got a Tag (Telepeage) unit, now for this year, just to help the journey along a little.

One downside from using the 'N' roads is the potential of getting caught in an out of town radar speed trap.  Over the years I've seen (but not sampled thank goodness) many of these in open countryside miles from any habitation where its very easy for us solo drivers to let the speed creep up over 56 mph..

play a game no toll roads ,no m.ways no dual carragways if there is a small road you can use. you are on an adventure not a race . see the small villages enjoy every minute. stop off and visit the parks etc .there is so much to see . cheers alan.

I like this quote, I'm off there in july, & I'm off for an adventure, so I may well take this advice. I'm also on a budget, & not in any hurry.
I think it all depends what you need to do, if you're aiming for a particular place and/or time, & don't mind paying for the convenience, then at least "some" toll roads will probably make your holiday easier.
Just promise me you'll slow down & take it easy once you get there

last winter drove to barcelona from santander then returned santander 5mths later .didnt make it all the way by the coast but had a good try . have lots fun and drive slowly. your on an adventure. you may be the first english person to set foot in some of the villages . life is only a game.

^^^^exactly my way of thinking, although I'm not a coast person, prefer country-side & forests. But either way, I can't wait!

Johnks, you are quite right but I was thinking more of actual manned by Gendarmes type radar traps.

I have got a Snooper which gives me the speed limits so I tend to keep to those. In 4 trips we have only ever seen two Radar traps. Probably because we don't use the main routes.

& you can all keep a look out for a white, 1973 (that's an old M reg) BMW 2002 touring (hatch back) it's in my picture <-. I've just finished off buying my kit in Ikea, & got a set of those plastic wine glasses (a fraction of the price they are in most camping shops!), would be a shame if I only used one of them during my whole holiday
