Huw,
That campsite looks great. I've emailed le clapas to see if they rent fridges and to see if they are still there. I got a bit distracted looking at the flooding in france since we have friends down there in some campsite...

Hope your friends are OK Laura - its soooo miserable to have that trouble at any time - but to have it ruin your holiday is twice as bad

'Nice' to see the insurance cos playing the 'act of god' line to avoid paying up again.

I'm not sure I'd describe La Bouyesse as 'great' - but it is better than adequate and in a super location for river fun and access to the best the Dordogne has to offer

good luck

Have you looked at Northern Spain - there are great campsites, with direct access to the beach. As the bay of Rosas is mainly a national park, it is relatively undevelopped - however the campsites are better than any I have stayed in France. Only 30 mins from the French boarder, about 2.5 hours drive from Montpellier or Toulouse:

Look at the following

Camping Aquarius (my choice) http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/details.asp?revid=9825

Las Dunas http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=7051/

Balena Alegre 2 http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=8168

Nautic Almata http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/details.asp?revid=9824

Alternative to flying is to tour down. A long drive can be 'less than relaxing' if done as quickly as possible or quite a pleasure if its no more than a few day trips in a line - Drive for an hour or so, have a day looking at something that takes your fancy and drive an hour or so in early evening. This gets you across France very comfortably and without feeling like you have wasted a day in the car.

Depends what you want. Seems that a lot of people who formerly flew on packages are now taking the better route so the Med is filling up .... however, if you're not bothered about being on a beach, there seem to be plenty of vacances elsewhere. We're going down the Saone-Rhone and have not found anywhere booked out. Perhaps you'd consider the Ardeche or the Gorges de la Loire?

When going to Spain, Cherbourg is my prefered crossing. We take the 7am Poole Cherbourg Ferry, arrive in Cherbourg at 11am (give or take a bit) Drive for 3 hours, stop for 2 hours, drive until 7pm - you should be 1 hour north of Bordeaux. Next day drive to Carcasson for Lunch, leave Carcasson by 2pm, arrive at campsite around 4pm.

In the past, when the kids were younger (now 6, 8 and 11) my wife flew with the kids and I drove, in this case, the drive can be easily done in 24 hours with a 3 or 4 hour stop over for a sleep

Tethersend, mattsurf we did a long trip last year so trying to make it easier this time. Both my sister and myself are thinking of flying loads more space in car and the men could drive. just need to convince them.

Are you sure? Their website suggests otherwise, of course it might be wrong. They  have Canadien Tent pitches which appear to be booked out (they didn't have those whe we were last there), however it still seems possible to book a standard camping pitch for anytime in August.

Christine, could you email me details of that site in the Somme you were talking about the other night? My email is nutgone at yahoo.co.uk (just in case this site filters that out it's my user name, at yahoo followed by dot co dot uk).
I can't remember when you said you were going to be there, but I'm going to book my ferry ticket very soon, thinking about mid-week sometime around the 14th July. I just wanted somewhere not too far from Calais, & have it all booked so I can get there & settle for a few days before I set off on my adventure.
Thanks,
Matt.

After all the problems we have had we are going here.

So helpful. They take touring cheques too.Very nice lady,Mary has sent so much info.Touring cheques start the 18th Aug,we arrive on the 13th and she's letting us use the cheques from that date.Only a small site with 250sqm pitches all with elec, water and drainage. It has a new shower and toilet block. There is also a sister site owned by the same family 50m away with 2 pools, resturant and bar ect. That site takes camping cheques.Mary also does cookery classes with things from the farm.I'm so excited .An area we wouldn't have normally have gone to.Some things happen for a reason !

Hi Folks!

Have you tried Camping Grande Vigne ID7214 in the Poitou Charentes area? It's only a small campsite but very nice & quiet - just what you need to re-charge your batteries! Has a lovely shower room and a nice above-ground pool. I know for sure they have some pitches available throughout July and some during certain dates in August.

That looks very nice, but a little on the expensive side for me, I'm trying to average around 10 euros a night wherever possible (especially in the north), I'm going to stick to municipals & the like, all I need is a loo & a shower, & I'm only one man with one small tent & one small car (& one small budget!)
Looks like my plans are changing anyway, as I'm now staying at Le Chant d'Oiseau from the 21st or 22nd, which is in completely the opposite direction from my original thoughts (can't really call them plans). So I'm on a massive re-think, as I also want to break up my journey distances between sites.
