You must try Sebastian Foulks Birdsong, Charlotte Gray and perhaps the Girl at the Lion d'Or too.

I have only read the first two, but they are fantastic novels set in France during WW1 and 2.

Labyrinthe as above was also one of those books you don't want to end, suspenseful and so well written; it switches between medieval and contemporary France.

Thanks, folks. Some good ideas there although I've already read Labyrinth and many of Cornwell's books - although there are so many of them I shall probably have forgotten them if I re-read!  (I have almnost the complete works of George Simenon - Maigret et al - but I start at the beginning every few years and it doesn't alter my enjoyment!

War and Peace I keep considering, but we've lost volume 2 ...... Dumas is a good idea, years since I read any of those ......   Any more ideas? We're also going through Luxembourg - are there any book related to the Duchy?
