The Wolflake is a fantastic tent, its one of the ones we looked at. Outwell are certainly well made..I love their fluorescent guy lines, and the way they have 2 anchor points in the seam.

We've bought some guy line from Outwell and will be taking the 'trip' varity off the 'slug' (3 man pop up from Blacks), and the Quechus Seconds base. And as an added insurance that I will not trip in the dark, we've got some Vango pegs that glow in the dark !!!!!!!

We're getting the Ferry from Hull on the Thursday and bombing it across France to get there for the Sunday. So the core of the holiday will be the last two weeks of August. So sick that all the decent classical concerts will have finished, but we can't have everything....If you hear someone singing opera arias whilst on a bike..'twill be me.

Have a great time ... I'm just checking out lift timetables now to see if they'll still be open when we could be there ...

For the first time ever, I have booked a site. Why, well the mountain festival is over the weekend, me thinks people will pitch the day before and take a few days to chill in the area. So 3 days in L'oustalet (Chatel), and then we'll have a look at Plan Du Furnuy, La Clusaz is truly my idea of Eden...and the idea of XC rather than single track stuff really appeals.

We once had a couple pitch next to us, La Belvedere in Annecy..not only did they seem to be noctural, they made rather a lot of noise to, much to everyone's amusement. I had to explain that it wasn't me, slightly embarassing.

This time next week we'll be packing the car ready to board the ferry in Hull at 17:00, very exiting, really looking forward to the cycling, walking and retracing my footsteps in Berne....My grandmother was born in Bern, coming from a very musical family in Lucerne. Bern is only 1hr an 1/2 from Chatel so it would be crazy not to   go and investigate the Clivio-Schauberg ancestry.

Chatel has a site, L'Oustalet right on the edge of town and only about 300m from the nearest ski lift. We have been skiing in Chatel (in a chalet) for the past 3 years and the site is always popular in winter, never stayed on the site myself though. We visited Chatel this summer when caravanning nearby in Le Grand Bornand and the site looked equally popular in the summer; saw many people mountain biking on the slopes, it is obviously a very popular activity in Chatel.

Chatel is a pleasant town, not too big but has all the ameneties you need including a reasonable size Intermarche at Le Chappelle D' Abondance, about 2 miles from Camping l'Oustalet.

Thank you Peterrabbit1007, I have booked onto the L'Oustalet site, although I thought L'Oustalet was also a place/hamlet name. Useful to know there is an Intermarche nearby. The grand plan is to stock up on basic provisions in Thonon Les Bains, to minimise the need to get the car out. Hopefully we'll be on two wheels most of the time.

Geographically the slopes surrounding Chatel look a little more 'gentile' than the fierce 'blacks' descending from Avoriaz and Morzine. Looking at the Piste maps give a clue. Also,Morzine is really well know in the MTB community and may be busier than I like..hence Chatel, also its where my other half first skied as a child.

Whether 'a pied' or 'a velo' it will be fab!!

Pitchperfect/ Peterrabbit - Wow, what a trip........just got back on Saturday night...best ever holiday.

L'Oustalet in Chatel was superb, facilities absolutely spot on. The mountain biking was a bit TOOOO tough for me so it was walking boots a foot. We went up Pleine Dranse, Rochassson up to 1650m, then up to super Chatel and walked in Switzerland.

Le Plan Du Furnoy - what a gem...loved this place the most. the views from this site are unsurpassed. The walking up in the Aravis was fantastic. Cow bells, can you switch them off...all night, all day bing bong!!!!

Next stop was Annecy - the Belvedere which I have previously raved about is under new management..not good. the police came on the site every night for a drive round, and there were some dodgy looking characters...so this is off the list.

Next stop Beaune, Burgundy....again fabulous camping in Savigny.

NOW, its back to work.

Thank you for the recommendations, they were excellent.

BobCat10 - just got back ourselves. Great fun as always. We discovered a really good cross country area down in the southern Alps, which I'm pretty sure we'll be heading back to at some point.

Pleased to hear you had a good trip and that the site recommendation worked out - I'd have felt quite bad if you'd gone there and hated it .

Time to plan the next one me thinks ...

In that case, let me know where and I'll have a look into it. By the Southern Alps, are you meaning Grenoble etc.

Such a shame that Annecy was such a disappointment, well not Annecy itself, just the site. I have reported our experinece to the Annecy TI office, who I imagine are responsible for the management appointments on municipal sites. If I'd looked at some of the site reviews for Annecy I would have seen quite a few with potential.

I'm buying the ferry tickets in February, will not get stung twice with the crazy ferry crossing cost.....its already £200 cheaper on the prices quoted !!!!!!

I've seen some nasty incidents with camping crimes, terrible situation. I guess the same vigilence we adopt at home must be adhered to on ANY camping trip.

We camped at Le Roustou (ACSI), situated slap bang on the beautiful lake, between Gap and Embrun. Definitely 10 out of 10 on the views-from-the-flaps scale. In full season I'm guessing this place would be quite busy with lots of young families, but at the end of August everything but the sanitary blocks was closed down, and it's character was very much of a simple, basic campsite, which just happened to be located in an utterly idyllic spot. Perfect for us.

There are no bike lifts in the local area so you have to be happy to cycle up hills (errr mountains) to enjoy it here. But the routes were fantastic, and amazingly for France, actually well signed. Good track surfaces as well. We only stuck to the blue runs (my girlfriend's suspension broke) but they provided enough excitement, and the views from the mountain forests over the lake were .... well ... quite good? Really lovely alpine villages dotted all over the places (there was a wedding going on in one of them), a little more low key perhaps than some in the main parts of the Alps, but we quite like it that way.

It's only about a hundred or so miles from Nice so the weather is pretty warm. I've had bad (cold!) experiences with alpine lakes in the past and I didn't go in the water, but other campers assured me I wouldn't need to hire a wet suit. I quite fancied a spot of sailing, but just couldn't get myself away from the bike trails. Maybe another time ...

We both really loved it and we'll definitely be going back to the same place, same site at some point.

Oh, they had excellent shops in Gap as well ... including a big Decathlon to stock up on extra camping/biking bits. I am a bit of a Decathlon tart, I admit, so I was quite pleased with only going there twice in eight days. My support group is obviously helping.

The only downside was no bread at the site in the mornings, and it was a couple of kilometers to the nearest shop to go and get it. We decided to be very English about it and bought some weetabix. Somehow we muddled through .

We camped on the Lac du Serre-Poncon last year and it really was pretty warm. We swam in it every day. We were on the municipal site at Savines le Lac. You can pitch right on the lakeside (we did). the views over the lake and the bridge were spectacular. I'm only mentioning this site to you as it looks to have easier access to the lake than the one you were on. Again, quite a basic site, washblocks perfectly OK, shop was shutting down for the season as we sent the last two weeks of August, but can definitely recommend the site and the lake.

It's a beautiful area isn't it?

The site we stayed on was just before Chorges, from the Embrun side, on the little promontory that jutted out onto the lake. Great views from so many of the pitches, as it was surrounded by water, and yes, there was definitely access to the water ... in about three different places I think!

I'm feeling a bit jealous about the swimming now ... I really should have girded my loins and taken the plunge.

We've gone off at a tangent here, its mountains I want to explore. Love lakes to look at but not keen on being in the water unless I'm in a kayak.

Will definately look at the GAP for next year, although its as far South as I'd wish to go. Like the journalist AA Gill I find the Cote D'Azure an 'excess pit', and find the arrid landscape quite oppressive...I like greenery, and I don't like the seaside at all (strange woman, yes!!!)I live only 30 miles from the East coast and do not like it at all, I'd rather be in the Langdales any day.

Love the expression 'Decathlon Tart', afraid we're a bit like that....we only went into one in 2 weeks this year. By some small miracle we didn't spend hours hunting for   gaz cartouches with a screw fitting, or have to repalce another punctured air bed this year.

All this talk of wonderful holidays in France i making me want to go away soon....but it's (classical)concert season on the horizon, rehearsals to attend and people to entertain, holidays will have to wait.

Not grumpy at all in fact far from it......I'm too long in the tooth to bother with things I dislike, that goes for people too.

I too play the guitar, but have shifted my musical interest to classical orchestral, choral and opera. In fact I have just held a concert and raised £1,000 for a local hospice, where my best friends sadly passed a way in May this year. Singing sacred choral pieces was a wonderful tribute to her, and we raised money at the same time....we have another concert on Saturday evening at St Mary The Virgin, Thornton in Craven, nr Skipton. Look out for 'Chordiality', we have a few concerts on the horizon.....mainly singing in North Yorkshire though. We hope to do a tour in France mid 2011.

Going back to la belle France... some of the recitals held in churches during the summer are fabulous. There's a hige choral following in the Alps, and such a romantic setting. I will never forget a concert in the
tiny village nr Lacanau,Bordeaux. A string quartet from the conservatoire in Paris, for one night only...fabulous.

Here we are in mid October and I still get a fuzzy feeling about standing on the top of the mountain range above Chatel.

I have the feeling that we may be back in the mountains in 2011.
