When you come to a town/village following "toutes directions" or "autres directions" will generally take you the quickest way avoiding bottlenecks.

"Centre Ville" means town centre.

Shops close from 12 till 2 but some supermarkets stay open (good quiet time!) They are open till later in the evening. Not many open on Sundays.

Parking is often free in towns, far more than here.If you have to pay it will be pay and display like here.

If you see a "deviation" sign (yellow) it is a diversion-usually road works! Follow it!

Supermarkets will often be signed "centre commercial". Like here they can be out of town centres. Some are massive!

Common companies are "Leclerc, Intermarché, Auchan,Carrefour, Géant Casino" Cheapest place for fuel.

Some are card only at lunchtime or evenings. The instructions are normally multilingual like on ATMs.

You need all the documents for your car, logbook,MOT and Insurance as well as driving licenses etc.

If you have an accident the police will check them ( from personal experience! (An idiot on a scooter hit our car in Calais!)

There are speed cameras but there are warning signs.

If someone coming toward you flashes their lights it normally means the gendarmes  are about! (Usually with mobile cameras or doing spot checks!)

Cop cars are not as easy to spot as ours!

Gendarmes drive blue cars with white stripes and lettering. Police National have white cars with red and blue stripes and logos.Plus usual blue lights and sirens!

Campsites are well signposted.

In some towns and villages be aware that you give way to the right if there are no warning signs. Most junctions have signs these days.

The roads are normally quieter than ours, no trucks on autoroutes on Sundays.

Have fun, its a beautiful place, we have been going for years and love it.

If you are staying at L'Anse du Brique, good choice, nice base near Cherbourg. If it is there, don't turn into picnic ground just before campsite, you'll see what i mean when you get there.

Anywhere round Cherbourg, days out, follow the coast to left and right, Cap de la Hague, or Barfleur. Spectacular scenery, and the moules at Barfleur are famous. Trip down "left hand side" of Cherbourg penninsula gives mass of beaches, and intro to D Day stuff. If you get confident, further afield, Mont St Michel, but in high season if you intend to visit the town, it gets totally packed.

Sunday morning market in the high flats to the right of town looking back from the sea, is brilliant. Cruise around till you see the cars parked. Lamb from the BBQ on a trailer is fantastic.

Hope you enjoy your 1st trip.

Hi Frogman

It is L'anse du brick that we've booked. The site looks really nice, with swimming pool and beach etc and nearby to the port. Really looking forward to it now (especially as I now know I'm not the one driving!)

hi Suzie

With decent weather you should have a great time. The beach adjacent is a picture, access straight off the site, lovely for evening walks round the cliff tops.

Another tip for "straight off the ferry types". When you get to the site barrier, do remember it is the one on the right which opens automatic for entry. I'm sure I gave the reception much amusement by parking in front of the left gate, and then asking them to open it for me.

Hi Suzie, when using your sat nav be aware when using the post code in France. This covers a large area approx. 10 squ. kilometers. Better to use GPS coordinats if poss. or actual address.
Have a great time & enjoy it.

Stewart
