I think there's a North Europe / South Europe divide here. The Dutch are much less body conscious than we are but you don't see all that many of them in budgie smugglers. I think it's mainly the French and Italians. We were on a site where you could wear what you liked in the pool and it was mostly older Frenchmen who indulged, so there may be a bit of an age thing too. One very rotund little chap who was well past his sell-by looked as if he had to use a shoehorn to get his on... very painful! I just wanted to say to him that sometimes the time comes to admit defeat and wear something a little more seemly. My bikini days are gone and so are his.

A horrible new youth trend spotted this summer was boxers under swimming shorts. This is to preserve modesty when someone yanks your shorts down I was told. Yuck!
I suspect it's so you can get the same effect as having your Calvins sticking out 6 inches above your jeans.

I swim a lot, even over here in the UK. I do not wear lesiure shorts for swimming, I wear a pair of these:

Never bothered me. Thy're comfy, don't hold several gallons of water when getting out and are easier to swim in.

Some blokes need to get a life and worry about other things instead of what they look like when swimming - After all, speedo's spend most of the time submerged in water!

I always check if sites insist on trunks not shorts and if they do I will not book it, me teenager just would not go in the pool and my husband is not keen either.

We just got back from France where I swear a certain dutch camper who strutted everywhere on the site in his hideous speedos had stuffed them.

It was enough to put you off your moules fites!
