Great, hope you have a lovely time, if you decide to go. Perhaps we will bump into each other somewhere in deepest France or Spain!

Sorry, didn't realise you had asked that! Yes, I have been through France to Spain in Feb, March and April. Weather has varied from freeeeeeeeeeeeeezing in the Massif Central to balmy on the coast. Plus a really cold/wet Easter at Vinaros in Spain. The most unpredictable element seems to be the winds at this time of year, and we have had some hairy drives in March along the coasts which particularly stick in the memory.

If you don't book, you can obviously do the "chasing the sun" trick, and that's just what we plan to do this year. We will probably use all ACSI sites, picking out a variety in different areas to aim for, depending on the weather.

Great, thanks very much for the info. We wouldn't be booking anyway, so could change direction at any time, It's just that we've never gone at that time of year, but it seems a nice time to go, springtime, and I was hoping that the weather would be at least sunny if not hot.

I take on board what you say about the winds at that time of year, it would seem to me it would be worse for that on the west coast than the east coast of Spain, or am I totally off the mark there?

No, the winds we experienced were coming home from Benicassim in Spain, and all the way along the motorway from there into France. When we got into France we abandoned the motorway, and stopped at Narbonne for 2 nights before venturing further up through France to Calais. We saw caravans and a towed boat overturned on the motorway, and a large lorry on its side in a field alongside the motorway.

Friends we met at Benicassim sent us a photo of a large tree uprooted on the campsite (Bonterra Park) on the morning we left, which had completely crushed a caravan, luckily the owners were not in it at the time. This was in early March about 2005 from memory.

The wind is known as the Tramontane (?) I believe, and in the Rhone Valley it's the Mistral. I wait to be corrected!!

Ah yes, we've experienced the Tramontane in the south of France on a few occasions too! But your journey sounds definitely worse than we've ever experienced it, but that is the unpredictability of it all I suppose.

I'm still very keen to try Spain in April, the idea is to set off around the last week in March from the UK, then see how far down into Spain we need to get before hitting the nice weather

Thanks again for your info, it is much appreciated. Mind you, this is all for next year, so I may well post some more questions nearer the time, be prepared!!

We're crossing to Dunkirk on April 11th then heading south till we find nice weather. we're thinking of the Bay of Roses but if it's nice in France might not get that far.
