No-one has as yet mentioned the Auvergne - 6 hrs (or less depending on what department you go to) from Calais. Tourism site here http://www.auvergne-tourism.com/-1-2.html , loads of walking, watersports and biking. Dead centre of France.

Yes Lac D'Orient is listed in the campsite search part.
Go the the map of France and either click on Champagne on the map or on the list of regions at the side. Then scroll down through the sites that come up.

Many thanks - the Auvergne area looks great, not too far from Dunkirk either.

Has anyone got any recommendations for campsites in the area? Thanks

We liked here in the Auvergne.    Plenty to see and do in the area. Campsite is beside the lake.  May be cooler at night as you are in the mountains.

I have posted these photos of Lac d'Orient on other threads but it is easier to put them on again than try to reference the threads. The site is really very good and the new shower block is superb and as a fellow tenter we appreciate how important that is. Indoor and outdoor pools and free wifi at the bar. Onsite restaurant a bit pricey but takeaway not too bad. Couple of nice restaurants within walking distance but again a little bit pricey but that seems to be the norm for the area.

Large hypermarket on the way into Troyes but about 21km away so stock up on a visit. Nice drives around the lakes and excellent for cycling as its all pretty flat.

Whatever you choose, enjoy!

Well we stayed at http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=9354 near Chatelguyon for 5 days and loved it. Nice little (cold) pool on site and an Auberge with genuine French country cooking 50 yards away. BUT it's small, quiet and very remote - you're half way up a hill so it can be cold too, esp at nights. It would be like going to a remote CS site in the Peak district. You also have to drive up and down said hill to get anywhere, so it's hard on the petrol. I'm putting these caveats in since not everyone loves remoteness ! Also not much in the way of walking or cycling from the site iirc.

We also stayed here http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=6290 in North Allier for a few nights, didn't enjoy it just as much. It isn't exactly rocking but is busier and is bang in the middle of a forest so lots more walking opportunity. Pool exists but is a bit rough and ready.

Check out http://www.campauvergne.com/gb.html for a good list of lots of Auvergne sites.

Hi lyanabint.
We are staying at la polombre in June. Is there a bus service to sarlat because i hear parking can be difficult. And can you reccommend where to stopover part way down for a couple of nights before we reach the dordogne.Thanx Gillian.

Hi Gillian

I dont know about a bus service to Sarlat but on the many times we have been there we have never had a problem parking especially, as like us you are going in June.

With regards to a stopover we usually use a budget hotel for 1 night - Premier Class or similar, in the Orleans area, and then do the rest of the journey the next day. Obviously it is quite easy for us as we do not have a long journey in the UK as we are only 20 mins from the Channel Tunnel.

But whatever you decide to do I am sure you will have a lovely time.

Jill

Hi Jill,
we are camping for part of the holiday in our own tent and staying in a caravan at la polombre for a week then camping for another 4 days. I wondered what the Atlantic coast was like say around the la Rochelle area or whether we would be better going inland.
                                    thanks Gillian.

Hi,

We stay at Camping de la Filature, north of Clermont Ferrand. There's no pool but it's on the bank of the River Sioule, great for messing about in.There's a small bar & superb takeaway. It's a 10 min walk into Ebruiel, the nearest village which has plenty of shops & a weekly market. It takes us approx 6 hours from Calais,

Fiona
