I would like to take the children to France on holiday this summer. Not sure yet whether we will be camping or staying in a gite.
The problem I have is where to go!! We will get the ferry over, then drive. I don't want to drive for hours, so the south of France is out. We drive to the Loire Valley a few years ago and that was ok. Our children are 5 and 7.

We went to the Lac D'Orient site mentioned by allengeneology - it is very handy if you've come on the ferry from Calais, close to motorway but a lovely area. We're going back again this year but for us it's only a stop-off on our way south. If you want a longer holiday this is probably a downside for it because you'll always have new neighbours coming and going - it's just such a convenient stop-off. The site itself has really good swimming pools and a few waterslides which our son loved. He's very excited about going back there again even though we'll only be stopping one night there on our way down, and one on our way back.

To save allengenealogy searching for the posts re the pictures of Lac d'Orient I will put a couple on again as its easier. It is a lovely site with indoor and outdoor pools for the children and the best shower block we have come across in France. Free wifi at the bar as well. The lakes (there is more than just Lac  d'Orient to explore) are massive and as you can see from the pictures Lac d'Orient even has beaches.

It is just over 4 hours drive (using the autoroutes) from the Channel ports of Calais or Dunkerque (Norfolk line from Dover to Dunkerque) is usually the cheapest option. If you can manage to out of high season Lac d'Orient is a campingcheque site and even does 7 for 6 which makes it a very reasonable deal.

Wherever you go, hope you have a great time.

We are staying here for an overnighter on the way to & from the Ardeche - it looks so nice we are going to set off earlier and hopefully get on an earlier Chunnel train so we can spend a couple of hours longer here!  Its seemingly far too nice for just an overnight stay
