You don't mention what brand of sat nav you have. It is only a tool and often has to be checked against a map. Most sat navs have the ability to edit the route so that you can avoid places you don't want to go. I have been using a Sat nav for some years now and find it indispensable. Perhaps what you need to do is a Google search for more reliable instructions?

I have the sat nag switched on, but know where I am going anyway. We have used the Paris route that val suggested and if you follow the bordeaux signs it is great. Having said that we used to have a dash to the sun, but now we take the Rouen route again as val said.for speed the Paris route will save some time but at a cost with the tolls.

My Garmin satnav, of course tells me to go via Paris, but I know better, having done that route, long before satnav's were ever around.

A quick look on via-michelin, gives three route's, for heading South, say to Montelimar/Orange from Dunkerque, all about the same mileage and time, but I know the A26 Eastern route, carries the least traffic, and is less than 10Euro more in Tolls.

That streach of A6 autoroute from Paris to Beaune, down to Lyon can be very slow going in peak, even more so when heading North upto Paris.

Of course any route can be subject to delay from heavy traffic, or accidents, but I would say, the Paris route for this journey, is likley to suffer the worst.
