I've just started looking at sites around Lake Garda for 2013 but have been really put off by the prices. I know the area's beautiful, and I really want to take the children there, so I suppose it's going to have to be a lot more research to find something that fits our budget, or lots of saving!
Yep Italy sites are expensive. We booked through one of the camping cheque schemes to make it more affordable. Still not cheap but I really dont imagine you'll regret it when you get there.

Though 2012 dates are not available there is an ACSI site near Rome, Camping Tiber, which takes the ACSI card (www.campingcard.co.uk) from 17th August.  This would mean that your pitch, two adults, car and tent, awning, and electricity would be just 16 euros, and then supplements for the children on top. According to the ACSI website it runs a shuttle bus to the station every half an hour.

Similarly with the ACSI card Camping Weekend *(nice site) on Lake Garda takes the ACSI card from 22nd August (similar 16 euros rate), so if you had your holiday during the last two weeks of the school holidays you should be able to find some cheaper sites using ACSI.  Also in the Veneto area there are sites which take ASCI in August.

There must be many more Italian sites accepting ACSI at that time of year as the Italian peak season seems to be much like the French one, and very short compared to our high season!

It's worth looking at the ACSI website for information as they have added many more sites for 2012 and as the guide comes out in time for Christmas details of the sites should be appearing on their website (or available as a link elsewhere on forums such as this one!) in the near future.

Parafke and Archies Campings (two useful websites giving POI's for campsites in Europe) usually manage to provide details of the Camping Cheques and ACSI sites before anyone else, so watch out for their links!  Sorry I can't insert the links to their websites as I'm not on my home PC where their web addresses are saved.
