Hi Andy,

Yes after three years it was time to move on to a bit more luxury and buy a brand new van, Pathfinder has been sold, and to people who are moving up from a tent, the same as we did. Also, yes we will be dragging it down South, Le Clapas already booked, just manage to fit the van onto one of their pitches

The "fit to travel" part must also be stamped in the passport by your local vet prior to travel. Don't know what they do when they run out of space in the passport at this section for frequent travellers though.

Sorry missed a bit, yes the Pet Passport Office do check the passport, to make sure the vet has stamped it.

I took my dog away 9 times using the pet passport scheme in the early noughties, until she died in 2007. We never took her to the vet prior to travelling from the UK for a "fit to travel" check, and it was never a problem. I think that section is more intended for animals travelling alone to indemnify the carrier (shipping agent, airline etc). However, I am sure a vet will happily do the check, and charge you for it!!

Has anyone ever had a problem because this was not done before leaving the UK?

hi GBpub

I was only trying to help, I thought you still had to get the blood test to get the passport. As it is only 2 years since I got my dog done.

My apoloigises,  Murano but your vet will keep you right.

I've taken my dog to France last 2 summers, two different vets no problems around 50-55 euros but that was including the tick and worm treatment.  The dog weighs about 36kgs.

Enjoy your trip, we even took the dog to Paris on the train and on the river seine very dog freindly enjoy

There is no requirement to fill in the "Fit to travel page ",it is only necessary for unaccompanied pets travelling to the U.K.

There is no need to take your dog to the vet before you leave the U.K. provided the necessary Rabies injection is uptodate.

minicamper, you are correct the fit for travel is meant for unaccompanied animals and does not need filling in if travelling with you and no need to have it checked before leaving the UK.

Edit; saxo already posted the same information, that will teach me to check after being on the phone.

Hi Blueexpo97.

Le Clapas, looks a nice campsite, I guess you will be using Val's none Toll route with the van?.

I keep thinking about a FC's, and have done plenty of homework, I think it's a natural progression from a Tent, rather than go to a TT. and of course maybe then onto a Caravan or even a MotorHome.

But there again, I may make the leap, straight to a Touring van, I know I am going to have to ditch the tent at some stage in my life, as much as we both love it, there is a lot of work involved in setting up, although I still enjoy that part.

But the time will come, when the mind is willing, but the body won't be lol.

I recon I can keep going with the Tent till I am 60, which is a good few years of yet, so I have started saving already, for when decision time comes.

I work close to the Trafford center each Thursday, and there is a Caravan show at Event City, later this month, which is kinda next to the Trafford Center, so I will pop in to get a few caravan ideas.

We have our new wee man Harry going with us for the first time this year.  The other two have their passports from 07.  Harry was vaccinated against rabies end last year and the passport applied for on 2 Jan.  No blood test required.  The procedure for us going in June will be:  Visit to vet for worming and tick treatment in the week before leaving (don't neglect this - there are some horrible ticks in France).  Vet stamps passport. (although 3 years ago he forgot to do 2 of the 4 dogs passports and I didn't realise until just before coming back and nearly had a heart attack at the port.  However the port authority either didn't notice or didn't care about that part so it may not be a requirement).  Go on holiday.  24 hours to 5 days (now) before return to UK visit french vet.  Tick treatment for re-entry into the UK now not required but I will still do it for above reason.  Worming treatment for re-entry still required. and stamp on passport by French vet.  We visit a vet well away from the French ports as they don't get the arm in and also take our own worming and tick treatment which saves money - the vets in France don't seem to mind.  I agree there is still a bit of a money making enterprise in here in that multi worming your dog should last it right accross the holiday and no need to do it twice and no need for a french vet to see your dog either really.  Also the ferry companies get the arm in too and charge quite a lot for 'processing' your pooch on the way back - i.e. checking the passport and microchip number (even though they've always handed me the scanner and I've done that bit meself)

TravellingPam, that is my thoughts exactly re dogs having to be re-wormed and re-ticked when they have been done before travelling. Also our 2 JRs are wormed and flead/ticked regularly every 2-3 months so shouldn't need doing in addition to that.

But, that said, when we are ready to visit France again with our 2 JRs we will, obviously, have to comply. But a bit of a money making enterprise as you say.

Thanks so much for all your help and advice, off to the vets Monday, really looking forward to being able to take her with us, and speaking to others on the poodle forum it's not to complicated now.
Thanks all again :)
