Tim & Cary have been reading your posts and see that you have been to Du Letty a few times, we are going this year for the first time (2 adults and 2 children 5 & 8) just got into camping last year. Not looking forward to the drive, would like to pick your brains, any recommendations??? ferry, tunnel, stop over, day time driving, nigh time driving driving from Northampton....

As Julie says you can see the details of my route from Benodet to Calais on my previous post. In 2012 we went by Eurotunnel using Tesco vouchers ( the first time we'd tried the Chunnel)We stopped off for one night at Pont Farcy as detailed. That route is about 500 miles with 2 main options of either via Rouen on non-toll roads or via toll-roads and Pont de Normandie. The latter is a little faster but more expensive with the toll charge.
We have, also, used the DFDS ferry Dover to Dunkerque route many times and that is certainly the cheapest crossing - under £100 return for car and caravan booked via the Caravan Club or with DFDS offers. The journey in France is similar to the above. Some folks do the whole journey in France in one day but that's too much for us - we do 350 miles MAX per day. Obviously stopping off enroute is easier for us as we just have to set up the caravan.
This year we are going Plymouth to Roscoff with Brittany Ferries. It is a MUCH more expensive ferry crossing. Our crossing is costing £494 with 7 camping cheques booked via the Caravan Club - buying the the CCheques lowered the cost as it then counts as booking accommodation which gets a cheaper ferry fare. We have booked the cheapest fare - midweek and daytime. Weekends and nighttime crossing cost more as cabins or reclining seats are mandatory.
From Roscoff it is only about 80 miles drive to Benodet and we use a quiet and picturesque route across the centre of Brittany. When we were tent campers we regularly went by the Plymouth -Roscoff route but it was cheaper in those days!!!
We live in St Helens and so the journey to Dover and Plymouth are similar distances. Obviously the shorter journey in France is offset by the shorter journey in France but Plymouth to Roscoff is still much more expensive. When our children we smaller we used to book a cabin on the night time Roscoff crossing both ways and slept away the sea crossing and then only had the shorter journey in France.
We have, also, chosen the Roscoff route this year because we thought that there delay on the M25 would be even worse than usual this year with the Olympics. Travelling to Dover we've found the M25 best at nighttime and with a night halt either near Dover or near Dunkerque. But again we have the convenience of the caravan to sleep in.
We first went to Du Letty when our kids were 14,12,10, 8 and 6. years old!!! We were frame tenters in those early days and had all our gear stashed in a trailer we towed behind our 7 seater cars.
Even before Du Letty built the new swimming pool we hardly seemed to see our kids from morning to night and Du Letty was always the only place they wanted to go to for our hols.
Incidentally although the Plymouth-Roscoff route is more slightly more expensive than the other Western Channel routes (to Cherbourg, Caen, St Malo, etc) when I checked out travel costs taking account of the greater driving distance in France the Roscoff route worked out the cheapest.
