Lovely campsite and great area and beaches. Of course the South of France has more to offer when camping, but not sure I agree with the consensus that it is not worth camping in the North.

Baie de Somme is a lovely area - you're right. And there's nothing wrong with 'the North' except (often) the weather! If you don't mind that, and don't want a long drive, then there are some lovely areas heading west from Calais - though immediately east and south of Calais definitely is an area I would try to avoid!
Except we're staying in Cassels this year for our first night - so there's an exception to every rule!

agree with that !! the contrast between , for instance Oy Plage to the east ( flat and dull )and the area round Escalles to the west ( green rolling hills with stunning cliff top views )is amazing.
Hi- we have just come back from our first trip to France, and didn't want to get too abitious the first time : we therefore went to Le Clos Cachaulaux, it is near Abbeville in a village called Mianney. It is about 70 miles from Calais, and I can thorughly recommend it.It has been reviewed on this web site and is in the Caravan Club Continental book. The people are so friendly, it is about half hour from the coast, and we found lots to do.
------------- It's not what you take when you leave this world behind, it's what you leave behind when you're gone
Camping in france is like life.......what you make it!!! Enjoy your first trip, find your feet, realise there's nothing too it then go back, again&again trying the rest of it!
We are currently in the Baie de Somme area and have been pleasantly surprised. Loads of waymarked walks for the wrinklies, mussels at 2 euro a kilo, lots of gardens and bird watching to die for. ( saw my first bluethroat near Le Crotoy, Tentz would not have seen that in Essex or Kent). This is all about 70 miles down the motorway from Calais

Yep nothing worng with Pas De Calais area or a little further down towards Abbeville for first trip. We did (in a gite) when we first had children as didn't want to travel too far and has given us a taste for exploring more different areas of France since. like Charente, teh Cote D'Azur, Paris area and Normandy. Now we have joined the camping/caravanning ranks we are towing for first time out there this year and heading for two centre holiday in Loire and Vendee. Driving really is very easy out there - we just factor in cost of tolls as we have youngish children so the long relaxed touring journeys can wait until we are older and sans enfants maybe!
Don't limit yourself to an hour from port however, as above the autoroute even towing will get you a decent way down within a couple of hours eitehr inland or down the coast
