That's one of the interesting things about package deals - they've come down such a lot that even in school holidays they can (almost) compete with the cost of good mobile homes on a good site. Thirty odd years ago when we started holidaying with Canvas it was MUCH cheaper to 'rent a tent' or even a mobile, than choose a package holiday. My sister and her family (10 and 13) are going to Rhodes, last two weeks in August this year. As an alternative she looked at Eurocamp/Keycamp/Canvas/Thomson Al Fresco, first two weeks in August (which is what they'd prefer) and the price was not that much different. In the package they can fly from our local airport (5 minutes from home - we pick them up), so no driving, and in four and a bit hours they can be there. It's a place my brother and his wife have stayed at, family run, no luxuries, excellent reviews, and good clean accommodation, nice pool, and a variety of restaurants around at cheap to expensive, depending on what you fancy. They love camping, but with the weather this year hope to get a bit better weather in Rhodes. However, the weather during my brother's Greek holiday in May was definitely iffy, too! They weren't in Rhodes this time, but on the Pelion peninsula and had only two days of full-on sunshine. I think this year the weather, almost everywhere, is exceptionally poor, and I feel very lucky that we had a month with so few poor days. I hope, for everyone who's about to go on holiday, that the weather improves, and if it doesn't that you make the best of it anyway!
