We're thinking of replacing ours, so checked on Halfords' website, the TomTomXXL is not in stock near me, you can check which store does stock them and the nearest is Belfast!! So if you live anywhere near there, you're in luck

The following comparison site is good for finding the best price on Satnavs.

We use an early TomTom 5 with a PDA (Hewlet Packard Ipaq HX4700) in a cradle mount, bought Europe and North America map CD's and is has been great, even allowing for changes to roads etc. The last TomTom5 map upgrade was October 2007, but for 99% of what we do it is great.

We have two, one is a spare backup just in case the regular one fails.

I have just ordered the Garmin Nuvi 2595LMT on Amazon for £154.90, apparently much reduced from the RRP and with an additional £30 cashback offer from Garmin. It has Europe maps and free map updates. The reviews on it look good.

My old NavMan for UK only has lasted 5+ years ( and was much cheaper) but the maps have been getting out of date. Hope this one will last as long but stay up to date.

Thats what we started with and worked fine for a long while, then in 2010 when we were doing a huge roadtrip in America the satilite reciever died on us (we were on route from Boston to new Jersey) Luckily I could still use the PDA as a map, so managed to read it by zooming in and using it like a regular map to get us where we needed to be. I will never forget trying to cross the George Washington Bridge in NY with just the ipaq and road signs! Thats what made us go out and buy an american satnav as that was only the 1st leg of our trip and we were going further south, then back to boston!

The one we got was about $130 2 years ago, and would have cost us a lot more if we had got the UK version at the same time

I have had my Tom Tom One for about 5 years now, has been excellent in France, never let me down. However on way up M1 yesterday it just packed up, so I'm going out on Monday and buy a Tom Tom XXL IQ Classic, and it's available in Halfords, PC world or Currys, and if it's anywhere near as good as my last Tom Tom it will suit me.
