Campsite wise, big recommend for Camping du Chateau at Condette. Well close to Calais immaculate small site in centre of lovely village. Walking access to shops for all services. There is the best small Carrefour we have ever found 2 mins from the gate, and the butcher in town is great.
Plenty of country walks, and easy access to Le Touquet, Boulogne old town and much more.
Best wishes

Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
Possibly a little closer than you were thinking and quite often used as an overnighter but having stayed twice for a week at a time Chateau du Gandspette is a nice site with lovely clean facilities. Supermarket a 5 minute walk away and close to enough towns, ww2 stuff, etc to keep you occupied for a week.
Ok, another thought... Compiegne - it's really near the castle where they film Merlin and there's a lovely forested area nearby. My work colleague goes there every year (B&B!) so not sure of campsites but there must be some. Here's a map link to show you where it is (slightly NE of Paris and straight down from Calais)Chateau de Pierrefonds
Righto, so we now have a shortlist which includes two of those recommended here.
Bridgeywidge I liked the look of the area but couldnt get a good feel or much info online for Pierrefonds. Frogman - Condette is the first place we visited in France years ago, indeed a nice site but thought we'd try sommat new.......oh and we did consider Le Brev, but reckoned too far this year. Kate W Gandspette is really popular but the 'supermarket carpark' feel of overnighter sites makes me fidgetty...but then I guess thats most of the sites in this area!
Again many thanks for posters thoughful comments - allengenealogy its nice to hear good news stories about this. So our 'final' shortlist, which I will be pouring over all day, most linked to UKCS:
