I think sailing to Bilbao is ... well ... nuts! (IMHO)
You'd have to drive right across France to get to the Costa Brava ...
Miles cheaper, and quicker, to drive down through France ... using whichever channel crossing gives you the best price/distance combo.
Use Santander/Bilbao/Gijon if you want to holiday on the fabulous Asturias/Cantabria/Galicia coast and Picos ... or to charge south down the centre or west of Spain.

Have a look at Camping Aquarius as well - I am biased, having stayed at Aquarius many times, however, we met some other British families who looked at both sites and chose Aquarius as it is smaller and has a more intimate atmosphere than L'Amfora. The beach is also less busy outside Aquarius

I tow a trailer tent and carry loads windurf boards on the roof and  bikes and a roof box on the trailer tent - Starting with a full tank of Fuel, I can get to Spain making just one stop to fill up, my fuel consumption is around 27mpg and it costs around £175 in Diesel each way. It takes 11 hours driving in France. With an overnight stop, it takes a day and a half to get there (we use autoroutes and I drive at 70 - 75mph)

Absolutely no point crossing to Santander or Bilboa - you will only save a couple of hours drive at the most

Not sure if weather is a factor, but Aquarius is already getting pretty full next August - We couldn't get one of the pitches we wanted until the second half of the month - hoping to get a cancellation so that we can go a week earlier

If you can, avoid France on a Saturday in August as it is much busier, we travelled this year on Thursday and Friday at the beginning of August and it was a straight run, we returned on Sunday and Monday (Bank Holiday) and despite the dire warnings of traffic, we had a fantastically easy run

Thanks Mattsurf
Its always useful to get actual info rather than just assume/guess fuel costs and travel times.

I will also look at Aquarius as your other post makes it sound interesting!

thanks for posting Mattsurf.

Don't suppose you know what the weather is like at the end of June into July?  We have booked for then so it won't be too hot for our 2yr old.

Do you also have any pics of the campsite?  Oh another thing, what is it like for bugs around the tent??

Thanks Zoe

End June and into July should be very nice - June tends to be a little windier than July and August and the sea will be a little cooler - although probably still very nice. Days will be high 20's rather than low to mid thirties and nights will be cooler. To be honest the temperature is not such a problem in July and August as the beach remains pleasant, when it gets hot however, going inland and sightseeing can be very hot.

Bugs are not a big problem, but some pitches are definately worse than others - this year we were at the edge of the campsite and had a huge hedge next to the pitch and my daughter did get bitten for the first time. There are no wasps on site and very few flies. we did spend most of our time outside and didn't go to bed until after 10pm so my daughters bites may be as a result of staying out longer. This is definately not one of those locations where you need to be in the tent by dusk to avoid the mosquitoes and it is much better than many sites in the south of France. The only campsite to avoid if you are sensitive to bugs is Nautic Almata, as this is on the river Fluvia so lots of slow moving fresh water

I do have pictures of some parts of the campsite, I will try to post them later in the week
