Ah First Class, you sussed me

We haven't actually said so yet - but I think both OH & myself have pretty much decided that it's going to be a holiday for 3 - & via Eurotunnel. Dogs make holidays nicer really don't they

Hi, We took our beagle away with us this year for our first caravan holiday in France - and we are doing the same next year! We went by Eurotunnel and will do that again - it was so easy, 35 minutes then you're there. In the August sun we made sure he always had water (obviously) and as he was tied to a long 'dog stay' we made sure he had plenty of shade. Go for it, they are part of the family!

We took our wire haired dachshund to France with us this year - a first for her and us! I was so worried about all of the same aspects as you.

I had no need! :-) She was already microchipped. But a visit to the vet for a rabies jab and a doggie passport a month before we set off and voila!

She is fine in the car as long as it is either not running with the engine on or she can sit with me. We had booked the Dover to Calais ferry to give Hubby a rest on the long journey to the Vendee from Wiltshire. When I queried about leaving her in the car alone for 2 hours, the upshot was that she sleeps in the kitchen alone for 8 hours a night so....

The reality was that I hated the ferry. I didn't like leaving her in the car, even with a duvet to sleep on, windows and sunroof open and a bowl of water to drink. We will take her next year and we will go Eurotunnel.

The rest was brilliant! She rootled and tootled in bushes and hedgerows, swam in lakes and the sea and was made a fuss of everywhere. France is VERY dog friendly. We took her to the vet who was wonderful and spoke perfect English and filled the passport in just right.

We will likely head for the Dordogne next year and guess who will be coming with us? Please don't get overly worried - just do it!

Make sure that your vet prescribes the correct flea and tick treatment.

Our dog stayed on Advocate that does not deter ticks. She was bitten by ticks twice and they are not nice. We had no idea at the time what they were or how to remove them.
We go again on Friday and this time the dog is on Advantix which prevents ticks. We have also taken a tick removal tool.

Also, we made the mistake of heading to the south coast of France. It was too hot and the dog didn`t like it, so we drove north again. A great way to waste a few days and £500 in fuel and tolls!
