Can anyone recommend an area/site between the two? With walking and nice village direct from site? Thanks

I'm not sure what style of siteyou want, but Camping les Domes de Miage at St Gervais les Bains is attractive . Three reviews and a link to their website on Campsite search here, and 35 other reviews available if you Google it.

Hi Mikeje & Feeblecat

In Summer we spent a month in the French Alps.

We spent 2 weeks at Village Centre Iles de Passy and visited the Mont Blanc Massif and other mountains around Chamonix which were very spectacular. You can read my review here:

http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=9120

We then moved on to Camping Lac Bleu on Lake Annecy where we were very fortunate to get a lake side pitch. My review here:
http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=9120  (Review number 8)

If you want to read more of our holiday and see some pics I have a holiday journal on another blue colour forum caravan entitled French Alps.

We enjoyed Lac Bleu and disagree with the negative reviews.

I hope this helps.

Tim

We enjoyed Annecy but it was not as spectacular as the Chamonix area.

Hi,

The whole area is beautiful. We usually stay in an apartment near to Evian, on Lake Geneva.

Annecy for me is somewhere that is just a day trip, as it is just so full of tourists.

Chamonix is lovely too, but choose your site carefully. We camped at one site for a night and it was like water torture with a fast running river very close by!!!

In Chamonix, they used to do a multi pass to numberous ski lifts, including Aiguille du Midi and Mer de Glace. This worked out cheaper to do over several days, and we went up Aiguille Du Midi twice.  If you can still get the passes, don't buy them at Aiguille du Midi(horrendeous queues in the summer hols!), purchase them at another lift like Brevent.

There are so many lovely areas in the Alps, as another poster mentioned Chatel, that is beautiful too.

Good luck deciding where to stay!

Smudger
