A good discussion is usually much more interesting, so long as it doesn't get acrimonious and personal.

When in Spain, we shop in the local supermarket, which seems to be very good value. Fresh Fruit and Veg are very cheap compared to UK and France. We find that 10 Euros a person gets a very good meal with wine and a soft drink for the kids. I agree that Ice Creams are expensive, especially in the beach bars.

A package holiday would not be much more expensive (possibly even cheaper) than camping in Spain, however, we love camping. We can take bikes and windsurfing kit and kids have far more freedom on the campsite than they would have in a hotel complex.

I was a food superstore manager before retiring and do all our grocery shopping so I am aware of prices. We stayed at La Croix du Vieux Pont near Paris with our caravan two years ago and the supermarket prices were expensive for most things, meat in particular. Very good for wine. We stayed at Benidorm last year for four weeks and found most grocery prices similar to home with some things cheaper. So cheaper than France. I am talking about supermarkets not little corner shops. Diesel was also cheaper in Spain. I found pubs, cafes etc in Benidorm much cheaper than UK and France.

I don't think a package holiday would be cheaper - the last time I looked, a cheap and nasty package was still coming in at about £3k...

I guess you want the beach, which limits your choice somewhat. The Vendee has some nice beaches but the weather is not as certain as Spain. Shame, because you'd save a fortune in petrol and tolls...

Personally, I don't like beaches (whoever thought sand and sun-cream should mix?) and definitely not the wide open, empty (ie. no cafes or toilets) type you mention .

Having spent the last year travelling in Europe, including both France and Spain, I'd have to agree with Frederico and Mattsurf about Spanish prices being cheaper, especially fish and meat.  I remember buying two good-sized pork chops for less than a euro in Mercadona - it was so cheap I felt quite embarrassed!  We also found eating out, or just having a coffee or a beer, cheaper. (Not as cheap as Croatia, but that's another story.)

But as Nelmo rightly says, the cost of the journey is higher, though if you cross the Pyrenees near St Jean Pied de Port and drive down through Spain you avoid the expensive French tolls.

And the beaches on the Bay of Rosas really are lovely and quite unspoiled.  For me, and lots of people I expect, a holiday isn't a holiday unless it includes the sea, even though I live on the coast in England and see it most days anyway!

It is a while since I took a package holiday - it is something I am really not into. I suspect that most people on this site don't go camping abroad to save money, they camp abroad because they love it, the fact that it is a relatively inexpensive holiday (once you have bought all the kit) is a bonus

I have the advantage of living close to the South Coast and having a shared family home in Weymouth, hence a Holiday in the Vendee would be a little similar (in terms of sea temp and weather) to a holiday in Weymouth... and a lot more expensive

We've only ventured into Spain once, but on that occasion also stayed on the Bay of Rosas. We were a bit apprehensive about going to the Costa Brave, due to having read all sorts of things, from packed beaches to thieves on motorways. But we really enjoyed the area. It was September, so no packed beaches, and never experienced any thieving.

We stayed at Mas Nou, which is not near the beach, although we cycled quite a lot more than we expected to be able to there. One day we did cycle to have a look at L'Amfora and the other sites there. They looked very nice too, so next time we may try one of those.

We had 25 days in Benidorm last year. Set off 25th March. 5 weeks in total. We travelled from Northumberland, used the ferry and some toll roads. It cost about £1600 diesel, ferry, tolls, campsites. Plus spending money on top. We are going back next year for a bit longer. Not worth going for a shorter time.
Package holidays to Spain are more cost effective for us for shorter stays.
We are going to Costa Brava in three weeks time. One week, AI, 4 star. £700 for the two of us.
Fred.

I would be in agreement as well Spain is cheaper but as said all this is subjective..Where you want to go, what you want from the holiday. If driving 750 miles through France is not your idea of a holiday (you can take the ferry but ouch) then Spain is also not for you. We treat the whole thing as a holiday though. I will set off early morning for Dover some 270 miles from home. Forgive me but I don't feel with the chaos of UK roads my holiday starts till the Ferry port outbound. We have an overnight Calais then 2 nights Paris for Disney and then a night near Milau then Spain for 15 nights with a similar return journey. You can get down in a day or two.
We shop at the supermarkets BBQ and eat out and choose one of the sites because we got a cracking deal. Las Dunas can be busy but you feel safe, happy and can enjoy a holiday and the beach !!!! ...As said its so important to get those two, three, four weeks right or at least 95 percent right, you cannot recoup the time...My job takes me all over Europe and I can fly to Girona for next to nothing family as well so again for me getting in the car with Caravan on tow is a holiday...You wont find me on a package holiday..

How about we organise a Spain through here (Caravans MHomes, folding, and tents) for 2014 August... happy to get us a decent rate...maybe should be in a different forum...

There's already quite a few of us who head down to the Bay of Rosas every year. Plus friends we meet up with every summer. I suspect that a organised trip would be like herding cats.

My wife's spanish and most of my family live there and I think spains expensive in fact as far as shopping clothes etc more expensive than the uk.for example nappies about 20 euros a pack compared to about eight quid. shampoo cheaper here beer varies depending where you are but imho about the same price .wine the the Spanish win hands down and fags too .weather definitely that one goes to thr Spanish. I think a 1000 euro is bloomin dear and france sounds much cheaper but each to their own, I hope you enjoy your holiday

Frederico, we were at L'Amfora last March/April and the weather was very changeable.  Some days were glorious, with warm sun - we had some wonderful lunches sitting on the seafront at Rosas and San Marti.  My son's fiancee even went in the sea, but the water was still very cold! We've got some lovely photos of Rosas with the Pyrenees in the background, still covered in snow.

On the other hand we had some very heavy rain too.  On one of the wet days we went to the Dali museum at Figueras which was fantastic. So go prepared for anything!

That is what I thought. We had good English summer weather with a couple of showers in Benidorm, mostly in the twenties. It is a toss up. Good weather in a 'car park' campsite or reasonable weather and some scenery?

Friends of ours are currently near Alicante, we had a conversation via Skype this afternoon and we could hear the thunder and hailstones there whilst we were talking to each other!!

Saying that, they have had good weather overall since going to Spain on the 15th, albeit with a few showers here and there. They said that when the sun came out earlier today it was quite warm.
