We take our mutt to France on a regular basis. We normally use the tunnel but have gone on the short crossing ferries. They usually charge £15 one way for him, the French vets charges between 30 and 45 euro. If you are in to sight seeing obviously you could have problems, the other obvious problem is not leaving your dog in the car, if we go the supermarket, one shops, the other walks the dog. Never had a problem on site with him, just follow the normal dog rules that most campsite lay down. If your going to leave them outside you should hopefully need shade for them, ours has his parasol.
One minor plus is French motel chains usually don't charge for dogs. The only minor problem we have with ours is checking him out at passport control in France, our dog has a Greek passport, this does tend to lead to a bit of double checking everything.
