It is good to remember that many areas of France have cycle hire facilities, if you are not actually cycle camping you would not have to carry bikes with you all the way from the UK. A child's bike may be small and fit onto your car, but adult bikes are more difficult to pack.
Nearly all French camp-sites are build around a circular crunchy grey gravel roadway, many kids spend weeks riding their bikes around this circuit clocking up huge mileages. If you miss your child he/she will be around again in a couple of minutes.
If you want a cheap and peaceful camping holiday in France then set your child off on the camp-site cycle circuit each morning and head for the beach.
