On our site in the Dordogne, the statics cost about 1,000 euros a week whereas our pitch was 300 - you're not going to make up that difference in petrol/ferry savings

As to the OP, I've found it very difficult to find a site with a decent pool but none of the other extras that we don't use either (bar/restaurant/kids activities). You either get no pool (or a very small one) or a big complex but then also all the other bits which you might not want.

Yeah, I've rebooked at costing and it would be hugely more expensive to stop in a static, perhaps taking it to almost double the cost for each week, or possibly half again.

& I love my caravan and the flexibility it brings!

Horses for courses isn't it, with a caravan you have the original purchase price, insurance, all the equipment, a more expensive towcar and so on, so simply comparing static fees and pitch prices isn't a fair comparison. But anyway, whatever works for you as a family, isn't it, as long as you are happy that's the main thing.

Pre caravan and new tow car purchase it may have been an option, but I daren't even begin to imagine the overall loss if we sold up to go back to statics etc!!

Doing our research now, we are opting to stop at the. It's expensive of the 3 sites we'll use for the last week of August and the better priced ones beforehand, juggling them accordingly.

Think the plan is southern Brittany, Loire Valley, Vendee and home. Very different to this year, but we did 2700 miles this year and at about 330 miles for £100 tank of diesel we figured we'd need to keep the distance less this year, and aside from Vendee they will all be new places for us.

This post jumped out as we have had many a similar dilemma when booking or organising holidays in france, holland, spain and it always came back down to what our families expectation was for that particular site usually based on well informed from sources such as this forum or our own experience. This year by visiting a site we had been to previously in Brittany and also a municipal in the Tours area the total cost for pitches over the three weeks came out at £630 this was for two adults, three children 14,10,8 with electric and awning, an average of £30 a night for good sites with pools and in brill locations we felt was an excellent result, ok the municipal did not have any entertainment or bar but we knew this and still had a great time even though our kids thought they might be bored they were'nt. The move halfway to the site in brittany with pools and slides, beach and entertainment was something they looked forward to and made moving easier, i guess we agree with the comments about what makes you happy if thats all singing all dancing fine if its cheap and cheerful great too; compromise is a very liberating thing once you embrace it!

Wow JK that's a good price! Do you go in the school holidays too? Which site in Brittany is it!, Do you mind sharing? Given your three are the same age as three of mine it may be suitable for us. I've found a suitable site but, if there's other suitable sites out here for cheaper than I'd like to take a look.

Don't know if the site would appeal as the pool isn't large, though for us having direct access to the beach made up for that - but we spent the last two weeks of August at Camping de la Plage in Brittany at a total cost of around 400 Euros for two adults and two young children.
We were able to use our ACSI card to reduce the cost for part of the last week and the town was in walking distance so we didn't have to always be using the car once we were there.

I had actually read the reviews of that site, but many mention tight access with big caravans. Ours is a large twin axle, so I ruled it out on that basis unfortunately!

we're doing the same as Amanda and renting a static with Roan. We are having two weeks split between a week in the Gorges du Verdon and then a week at Frejus on the Cote d'Azur. Its over a thousand pounds cheaper than the same sites and dates with Eurocamp. I've priced up pitch costs for the 4 of us and they come to around £800 for the two weeks. The holiday in the static which is a new 3 bed with air con is only £450 more and for us its worth it. We only spent £350 on fuel going to the south of france and back this year and really appreciated the price difference on the autoroute not towing anymore. We had a caravan til July but we just weren't using it enough to keep it. We did take it to France twice and loved it. I did like the flexibility a caravan gave but I love the ease of turning up at a static and then leaving it at the end of the holiday.

Back to your original question, Chantepie in the Loire has some very large pitches and is reasonably priced. I think its a camping cheques site now too. De la Plage in Brittany is a fantastic little site but I would not recommend it with a twin axle, the access roads are tight. De la Baie across the road and owned by the same family has better access and is a lovely site.

Sorry Nat - hadn't noticed you had a twin axle. No, unless you have a motor mover, I'd avoid la plage (my review memtions the tight access too!) but I agree with Savanne that la Baie would be better from that POV and is very similar.
I costed Eurocamp for la Plage and they said it would cost £126 per night for the first week we were there and £96 for the second, which did make me feel slightly better about our towing fuel costs! Shame Roan don't go that far north :-)

How much?! Lol

We do have a mover, but as we've only been towing since Oct I prefer to steer clear of anything described as 'tight' !!

Will take a look at the other suggestions.
Thank you!

Sorry for delay in responding Nitnat, the campsite in brittany was Camping la piscine in Fouesnant just down from Beg Meil, its on the same bit of coast with a fantastic beach looking out over the glenan isles 1mile from bottom of campsite down country lane. Outdoor pool with three slides, indoor pool in case weather is iffy as is the case sometimes in Brittany. Bar serving food, various activities day and night but not over the top and commercialised, good pitch size for our twin axle and access is not bad either, Good wifi signal around pool bar area, friendly staff and still very french which is good in our opinion. It worked out at £38 a night for 11 days in august with the municipal at La fleche being £22 given the average of £30 per night for whole holiday. Camping la piscine is not perfect i dont believe any site is but for what you get we think its a bargain. If you want any more details please ask, no problem
