Agree with both those (above). 'Suck it and see' is very wise.
In fifty years of camping I've only repeated sites twice!
And I've yet to score a site ten out of ten … keep seeking the elusive combination of site/area/weather.
Maybe, if you don't want to move about, your best course of action would be to rent statics … you're likely to get a better standard of van/static than buying an 'el cheap', which would probably be a 'make up the beds every night' job anyway … is that what you really want?
Fall in love with an area first!
Don't forget to leave a review of the French and other European campsites you have visited!
Many of us go down to sth France for some hot weather in the summer but I can see the merits of having a 'retreat' not too far from Calais. I know the area very well from countless day trips, all you need to do is drive 50miles inland & you could be a million miles from the UK among locals who have probably never been to the UK in their lives which takes you out of yourself for a long weekend etc, quite nicely.
I think we are going to go with renting a van for a couple of long weekends this year to see how it goes and then make a decision from there to decide if we will get a tow bar fitted and use a van for touring or try to find a site we like to leave the van there all the time.
Personally I think we will end up touring to give us the best of both options.

I think that's a wise decision :-)
