I have to stick up for the club. We don't book sites through them - don't book in advance as we've found we don't need to - even in August. We do buy the ACSI guide from them, even though we travel in August when we can't always make use of it. This means we can book a 'package' for our ferry crossing. This year it saved us £200 on the on line price quoted by P&O. Even if we can't take advantage of the ACSI reductions we can use the book as a guide. The sites in it that we've used in the past have been very good.
When we have been on sites during their 'ACSI' accepting period we have always had a large choice of pitches. Can't imagine why you'd want to book - much better to have a shortlist and make sure you like the look of the site before you pitch. I usually call our preferred site in the morning to check they have space. The only time we've encountered full sites is in coastal areas - and then it's only been a case of calling 2 or 3 to find one with a space.
I have just called the club to check whether I can get a better ferry deal (ITX) by buying the ACSI card from them, and was given a categoric 'no'!! I have now booked through Alan Rogers, ferry price with three cheques, in August, cheaper than the DFDS ferry only price. June ferry plus 3 cheques £12 more than DFDS ferry only price, and cheaper than the C&CC ferry only price, (using P&O, rather than DFDS I presume.)
Happy now!
The ITX fares apply only on the longer crossings which do offer a significant discount sometimes, so if you're using a longer crossing it's always worth checking whether buying an ACSI Guide or some Camping Cheques will offer you the same discount. The Clubs both offer ACSI - though I've seen no mention that it will qualify you for ferry discounts, but Camping Cheques definitely do - and sometimes the discount is much more than the additional cost of the cheques.
