There are free walking tours of Rome that leave every day at 10am (For the English speaking tour) from just along from the Spanish steps. We went on the tour last year and was very good.

Also, train direct to the centre from the airport is correct, but we used the Terravision bus, it was a lot cheaper and dropped us at Termini.

We particularly enjoyed seeing the Catacombs along the Appian Way, and the restaurants in the Trastevere region were the best by far!

I spent a week in Rome, and loved it, when I was pregnant with my eldest son, in June thirty four years ago!  We went by train and the second week was spent in Sorrento where we met up with my MIL who was holidaying in Capri.  I've often said that I'd love to go back, but never got there, but this thread has stimulated my interest.

If my birthday wasn't in July, when it's likely to be too hot, and crowded, then I would be suggesting it to OH as a nice birthday present!  Perhaps I'll have a late birthday this year in September or early October.

Ooh, go, Val. Easyjet flights can be picked up for a song at the right time these days, and booking.com comes up with really good value, nice hotels. We stayed in a lovely B&B near Termini when we went both times (2010 and 2012). Glass of wine people watching as the sun sets in Trastevere.....nothing nicer.

Don't want to hijack this thread, so I've replied elsewhere in the Comparison costs - flying..............!

Back to Rome - beautiful city, and my OH says 'What a good idea' when the birthday idea was discussed!  Then he threw in Marrakesh as an alternative - and I've never been there!

Fabulous area and we'd love to go back, but expensive, whatever the travel method.

We stayed at the Sorrento Palace. Room balcony overlooked the bay of Naples and Pompeii. Went over to Capri, and up the chairlift. Took a train up to Rome to meet with middle daughter, who was grooming for the Agnellis then.

Funny story. We bought what we thought were ritorna tickets but coming back, the conductor - in a mix of english and italian - said "your tickets are singolos, and you're sitting in prima classe"

Loved Rome, if not the graffiti. The sunlight streams from the roof windows in St Peter's were spiritual.

They say all roads lead to Rome. I hope we go back one day.

Wonderful city. Great experience.
Get yourself a secure waist band money belt or similar.
On the train between our campsite and the station in Rome, I twice (on different days)felt a hand in my side trouser pocket where my wallet was more secure I thought. Foiled the attempt both times - Romany types - not the guy behind who was part of the gang, but the guy behind him who he was protecting.
Mrs Oxter was advised to wear a garment over her shoulder bag.
Don't want to scare you, but use other tactics too, like carry a decoy wallet with very little cash and an expired card or two in case of mugging.
Most must sees are in walking distance and don't miss the Vatican and museum.

Barcelona. Lovely city to wander round, lots going on. Tourist buses take you to the sights, worth the trip. Either stay in a city centre hotel, or camp near the beach and use the bus.

Rome is fantastic, and I wa lucky enough to go as a guest with IBM  so it was Villa Farnese 4*.

What to see:

  • St Peter's (Vatican) - Sunday mass is wonderful !
  • Pantheon
  • Castel St Angelo
  • The Forum (good restaurants around here)
  • Piazza Navonna - great cafe's
  • Colliseum
  • Palazzo Justice - see the mounted Polizi
  • Trevi Fountain

So much to see, but be careful and watch out for pick pockets.

I have some friends going to Pallazolla next month, fantastic opportunity to stay at the former palace and attend vespers and mass throughout the stay. Unfortunately OH couldn't get the time off, and our Parish group only go every 3 years.

Buon Vacanza

I don't know if this has already been mentioned but, if you're planning on visiting the Colosseum then get your tickets at the Palatine Hill ticket office. It's bad to feel smug as you walk past the long queue at the Colosseum office, but hard not to!

Also, re less touristy areas...we stayed near Campo di Fiori and there were some lovely, quieter restaurants there.

Enjoy!
