we usually go the portsmouth/caen route, but it is expensive. this year we are going dover/calais. we booked an early deal £120 return!! it does mean travelling in the middle of the night, but we don't have small kids anymore and we should arrive at calais at 1am.  the plan is to drive to the first aire - only about 20km, put the legs down and have a good nights sleep before travelling on down to the loire valley.

yelloh have just taken over that site this year, so i'm hoping it is as nice as it used to be! don't forget to take a drive to mont st. michel while your there. it's about an hours drive and is the most beautiful place on earth!!

just noticed you're from hampshire so portsmouth could be the easiest route for you. if you were to go portsmouth/caen, you would only have a 20 min drive to the site on the other side of the water!!

condor ferries do a cheap crossing to caen, but it's not on the website. we found it last year in the condor ferries brochure from the travel agents - think we paid about £300, compared to £600 with brittany ferries. if i remember rightly it was for travel only on a sunday, which suited us as the traffic is a bit quieter on a sunday anyway.  shop around, there are massive savings to be made.
