just noticed you're from hampshire so portsmouth could be the easiest route for you. if you were to go portsmouth/caen, you would only have a 20 min drive to the site on the other side of the water!!
condor ferries do a cheap crossing to caen, but it's not on the website. we found it last year in the condor ferries brochure from the travel agents - think we paid about £300, compared to £600 with brittany ferries. if i remember rightly it was for travel only on a sunday, which suited us as the traffic is a bit quieter on a sunday anyway. shop around, there are massive savings to be made.
