I would do something similar to what we did some years ago, simply head off with a vague idea of where we wanted to be, started off in France in the Loire, headed down to somewhere near Valence, then on and over the border into north east Spain, then back to the southern coast of France, and then on to the Lot region, then back to Blighty via eastern France.

A six week adventure with five kids, a tent and an overstuffed trailer! Amazing memories we will never forget.

Also wonderful was a similar trip where we headed down the eastern side of France, through the Mont Blanc tunnel, on to Lake Garda, down to Tuscany, and then completely randomly we woke up one day and decided to head down south towards Napoli and ended up in Pompei!

Also visited my husband's family's home town, and managed to find some relatives, which was rather exciting.

As well as going to some of the places that my father was stationed in during WW2, he was one of the so called 'D Day Dodgers' in the Eighth Army.

We sure know how to pack it all in to a holiday!

Once our son finishes school next year, we might be a bit freer, it would be lovely to have that great feeling of freedom with no particular plans and the anticipation of fresh, new and exciting experiences again.
