Meh, I learnt to drive in London. If I can cope with that I can cope with French drivers.

We missed Lyon by going down the N7 from Orleans via Nevers, Moulins and Roanne to St Etienne - and joining the Rhone valley motorway south of Lyon. Not a bad road at all.

Was that way any quicker? We want to get there asap and avoid faffing about with the Rouen route which was why we plumped for the faster autoroute all the way route.

Last summer we stayed in Anse (stones throw from Lyon) travelled through the night and morning rush hour times, no problems at all except for it lashing down all the way through Champagne. Route wise I just followed the sat nav and the signs.

Just came back through Lyon on Friday and it must have been the most straight forward trip yet.
Now the punters heading South were in the usual 4-5 mile tailback to enter the tunnel.
We always go round on the way South now.

Its on the A6 just 'before'. the River Saone in Lyon if you are going south.    If you zoom in on Google maps you will see it, its called Tunnel Sous Fourviere. Then there is another short tunnel between the river and the canal. Often the autoroute can be backed up to Junction 34.

Hope this helps.

Thank you latecamper!

I'm intending avoiding the toll roads anyway, so if we go down the A30 to Mornant where there is a municipal, we should miss it altogether.

When I put the route into via miche from Calais to Avignon
the tolls would be 123 euros. Ouch. Luckily we can take our time.

We're also travelling through Lyon on a Saturday. After an overnight stop near Troyes, I'm hoping by the time we get to Lyon the traffic may not be too bad. Unfortunately we've already paid a deposit on a b&b for our overnight stop so can't really change the route. Just hoping that after several years of pain free travel through France this won't be the first time we get caught out!

Yes, we've also booked hotel overnight, for us at Dijon on the Friday night. It's approx 2 hours from Dijon to Lyon, so hopefully if we set off early we'll get through before it gets too sticky. We're also going late in the season, so maybe the French will have gone home by then too :-)
