Criteria for going this crossing is that I don't want my husband to have to drive thousands of miles to get to where we want to go. He had a Pulmonary Embolism last year so prolonged sitting in a driving position is not for him. We have taken the dog across on the ferry to Ireland in a kennel and he was fine. This is just so much longer. However I am reassured that I can access him at all times during the crossing. So that means we are on the excercise deck during the hours of daylight and beyond. A small price really. Also he has never worn a muzzle so wondered if a strap muzzle is allowed or it has to be a cage muzzle? But I will make sure he is tethered whilst driving. Do agree on that one. Even if he is tethered to me!! Joke........

Have been looking at campsites for Northern Spain and Portugal for most of June. We have hired a Motorhome , 7.85 length, 4250 weight along with a miniature schnauzer!! Am looking at the Alan Rogers book but am not finding it helpful given the above details. They don't seem to show these details in the book. Are there other books that you think would be more helpful?

Would very much appreciate you help out there.

Do you mean sizes of pitch, and sites allowing dogs?

Take a look at the ACSI Card website (www.campingcard.co.uk) which will give you not only discounted sites if you buy the book and use the card, but will tell you average pitch size on sites, plus whether they takes dogs and whether there are any restrictions on type/number/size of dog.

The website is not particularly easy to use, but I would just generally browse an area and see if there's anything you fancy, then look at the detail of the site itself.

We also got info from acsi and camping cheque site guides.
Some sites said one dog allowed if under 10kg in weight but happily let us in without wanting to weigh our 16 kg dog!

Same with muzzles - compulsory in public areas on ferry as well as certain countries. However we didn't see any other dogs wearing muzzles! Good job really as Cassie hated hers so we didn't bother either! (It was a 'basket' type one by the way, she found the tighter material ones even more uncomfortable. (or so she told us.))

Think the bottom line is common sense should prevail - if your dog is not aggressive and well trained most site wardens as well as ferry operators will be happy to take your money!
