Wow! What a trip! I'm quite envious.
I would love to venture to Germany but hubby and kids very averse to driving that distance.

It was great. We stayed in municipal campsites which kept the costs down and ate pasta!

Nigel what was the drive time to Germany ( just curious )

Anyway the big news is I have the ferry booked for next August - got my vouchers and used them for a one way trip - the price goes up by E50 when using the vouchers so definately better to use them all against one way - still saved a good bit though so was worth it for me.

We split the driving into 2 days. Day one was a non toll drive to the Loire and stayed near Blois. Day 2 was a drive to bergundy, only to realise that Germany were in the world cup final that night and the thought of watching them play in the final, in Germany, was too much so we motored on into the black Forrest! We started out at about 1 pm and arrived around 7pm at staufen.
If you were driving direct I am sure you could do it in a day.

Just booked for the end if July to Roscoff. It was €300 cheaper than going at the end of June. It was also cheaper than my Cherbourg crossing this year and we are going to Roscoff with a better cabin.
Well pleased. Now to look at sites.

Well done Safron and Ewen.
We have finally booked too. After looking at all sorts of permutations of dates, times and fares, etc, we have booked with Stenaline. We will leave the campsite the day before our return crossing and travel up to Normandy, which will take the pressure off getting to the port the next day. It will also allow us to visit the Utah Beach Museum, which we didn't have time to see when we stayed in Normandy last year, much to my husbands dismay, thus keeping everyone happy! So we've just to find an inexpensive hotel in the area for that night.
So now waiting to hear from La Garangeorie next week to see which of our pitch preferences they will offer.

There you are now Claregirl....and all set for next year already !. What price did you pay for your ferry crossing.
We are taking a break from camping in France this year as we are planning to do our once in lifetime visit to family in the USA for 3 weeks before our 4 kids are too grown up. Our relatives in the US are keen campers too so who knows we might do a bit of camping when we get there if we can borrow some gear. We brought our relatives to Purecamping in Querrin for a few days this Summer and they loved it despite the Clare rain. We had a ball.

GeneralSherman - €1235 with Stenaline going end of June. For the same dates with IF Oscar Wilde was €1567 and on their economy Dublin service €1502 - discounted prices!
I've a feeling this could be our last 'all family' camping holiday in France for a while as our girls will be 16, 14 and 9 next year and the older two were lucky enough to have an additional holiday to the US this August to stay with relatives and they're really eager to return. So we're thinking about looking into doing a Home Exchange in New Jersey in 2016 - we'll see. We do love the US and did our 'once in a lifetime' 3 week trip to Orlando in 2008 and loved it so much that we returned in 2010! The flights from Ireland have become so expensive though.
I have friends in New York who go camping every year - they take camping to another level over there!
We haven't been to PureCamping in Querrin, even though it's only 45 minutes away from us - I've only heard good things about it though. We did camp in O'Connors in Doolin last year and loved it - great location for walking to the local hostelries.

Claregirl your ferry seems very expensive ?? We are travelling with a similar set up I think - car + roofbox + trailer + 2 adults and 4 kids and our price for mid August was E838 return with IF then I got E250 of with the vouchers

Just waiting for Camping Ar Klegeur to open their reservations. Was looking at some sites further south but the cost would have been over a grand.
This way we have a site near the port, on the beach and walking distance to St Pol De Leon. I just hope the weather will be as good as Normandy was this year.
Oh yeah, the ferry to Roscoff for car, roof box, 2 adults and 2 kids and cabin with windows and meal was 1100 Euro.

Safron my experience of booking ferries to France from Ireland is that it IS cheaper in August but the campsites are at their more expensive then. You are caught between a rock and a hard place.

Safron - yes, we've a similar set up, but 3 kids (oldest is charged as an adult for ferry), but as GeneralSherman said the ferry fares can be cheaper in August than June. We always go end June / beginning July for our 2 weeks and we usually get away with low/mid season campsite prices. This year we paid €1500 with IF so the price for next year is quite an improvement.
I received my booking from La Garangeoire last week so that's all sorted now too! And it's not even Halloween yet! I've never had everything booked so early before.
