Yes C.C. have some good deals on Hull routes as long as you travel on a Sunday and take 7 camping cheques at the same time.So happy we dont have to travel down to Dover.

They are a way of paying for off-season nights on campsites which are in the scheme, see www.campingcheque.co.uk for details.  In theory each one costs you £14.95 and pays for a pitch, two adults, car and caravan, awning, and electricity.  They're accepted on a range of sites throughout Europe, including in Britain.

However, where they do have an advantage is in some of the examples above - if booking a ferry on one of the longer route, through the Caravan Club, when the additional cost of the cheques over the ferry alone can sometimes bring down the total cost of the package by much more than the cost of the cheques, so you end up with a net saving.

Sometimes the saving is smaller than the additional cost, but if you're going to use the cheques then it makes sense, and sometimes people who've made a saving but can't use the cheques sell them on forums such as this one, to people like me!

Hi, just had a quote from cc hull to Rotterdam no camping cheques included £386 going out 23 may. The price has gone up a bit as we paid that last year with cheques.

I'm resurrecting this thread. I hope you don't mind.

Got a price of £624 yesterday (CC online car, caravan, 2 adults, 2 kids) going out in July and back in Aug. changing dates to weekends didn't make much difference. This seems steep to me however P&O quoted over £800 for a similar trip.

Am I missing a discount or other obvious way to bring the cost down? Apart from driving to Dover, that is!

I don't know your dates but I tried a dummy booking on the CC website for going out on 26 July returning 8 August. Don't know the length of your car or caravan, so guessed at max 4.5m for car and 5m for caravan. Don't know ages of children, but assume they are under 17. Added 7 Camping Cheques and got the price of £488.43. That is not with accommodation though, I didn't go further than getting a price for that.

It is a well-known fact that adding the minimum required amount of Camping Cheques will reduce the price!
If you have no use for Camping Cheques it will still be worth getting them to get the reduced price for your crossing, and on forums such as this one there will always be people ready to buy them off you at around £10 per cheque, so you will make on that as well.

And should you decide to sell the cheques, can I be first in the queue to buy them off you please!!

We tried the dummy booking and there is a massive difference in price for our 7.3m van.

I don't know what their 'cut off' point in length for such a jump, but its no use trying to cheat as I saw them out with tape measures 2 years ago - wrong length, back to the office and pay the difference - and it could be a big difference.

PS a cabin is compulsory and that would add another lump!

It's a heck of a hike for peak season. We are off to Belgium over easter, and paying less than £180 (inc. cabin) with C&CC for the Sunday night one-way trip Hull-Rotterdam.

I just tried another dummy booking, all the same details, except for a caravan up to 7m, not 5m as previously. Still get the same price of £488.43 including 7 Camping Cheques, but excluding cabins. I know they are compulsore, but I just left it at that, just to see whether the extra 2m length of caravan made a difference. It didn't, so if you got a more expensive quote for a 7.3m caravan, then it would seem caravans over 7m are more expensive.

Edited to say that I just tried booking for a caravan up to 7.5m, and I STILL get the same price of £488.43. That is going out 25 July, returning 8 August, car up to 4.5m, caravan up to 7.5m, 2 adults, 2 children under 17, 7 Camping Cheques, but no cabin. That is via the Caravan Club website as a member.

Thanks for that.

The P&O site is all over the place - showing £311 + £311 (inc cabins) = £728??? Must be the VAT.

Tried the Caravan Club and its £368 return inc cabins (I'll have some of that!) but it won't confirm as it can't get through to the P&O site.

I've noticed recently that when there is an anonomly, then its usually me.

Maybe we should just go to Devon and get in everybodies way again.

Thanks for the advice Ina, I played with the dates and added camping cheques - Hey Presto £430 - ish. We have a slightly shorter trip but only by a few days which is more than made up for by the saving. We've only got a standard cabin (too tight to pay for an upgrade) but it'll be an adventure for our kids (who will be 1 and 3!). All we have to do now is agree on where to go when we get there.

To pay you back you get first refusal on the camping cheques - I'll message you when they arrive.

The prices are crazy high and they always have been, BUT depending on your location Hull is still more convenient. P&O certainly aren't trying to win new business on this crossing. There will come a time when we two will reconsider the route.

There is no competition for P&O to make any significant discounts. There are often offers from Hull - Zeebrugge but these are always aimed at people who are doinga weekend in Belgium/ Holland, not for those of us who want to stay a while and boost the economy.

When you do book it is an idea to actullay speak to someone rather than jut go by the on-line quote. We learned a few years ago that family cabins and club class have some good opportunities if you book early enough.

I'm glad you managed to get a good price in the end; as I said, I had no idea of your details, but the principle is the same: add Camping Cheques and it becomes cheaper!

Thanks for the offer of the cheques, I do appreciate getting first refusal. But before you get rid of them, check out if there are any sites where you can use them yourself. I suspect that there will be few, if any, when you go in July/August, as they are mainly accepted in the low season. But there are sites in the UK which accept them, so perhaps an opportunity to use them over here for yourself some other time?

Glad you got a better price. It's always worth playing around with dates etc and I'm sure that at weekends caravans go free as well.
