This is a lovely area - beaches are fab.   We ALWAYS go to a beach with lifeguards, and would in the UK too.   The sea can have some nice good waves when the tide is coming in, and can be totally calm when it's going out.   These are lovely beaches, don't be put off by the previous posts!

There are a lot of big, noisy campsites with loads of entertainments etc in the area.   We go to Camping Logis du Breuil at St Augustin (look at the reviews on this site) which has huge pitches and loads of space, no entertainment but is perfect for families with young children, and older children who are happy making friends with others and not bothered with organised activities.   The road between Royan and la Palmyre gets VERY busy in the peak months.   The location of Logis du Breuil is great, as you can miss out the busy coast road, whichever direction you want to go.

We knew Le Logis du Breuil many years ago when it was a casual, informal farm site. Then we went back many years later and were shocked by what it had become.

Obviously many people do love it there and go back year after year, but there are many, many reviews of that camp site on line - at ACSI and Zoover as well as here on this forum. They are pretty thorough and spell out the shortcomings as well as the plus points. I'd say that newcomers should read them carefully to get the full picture before they go.

Indeed. I am one of those who return year after year, mainly because I store my caravan there. Why do I return? Because of the large pitches, the quiet at night after 11pm, the lack of all-singing all-dancing nightly entertainment, the situation of the campsite (not near busy roads but close enough to shops and beaches), the cycle routes, and the many friends I have made over the years.

What would I change about Logis du Breuil? The wash blocks (although one has been completely modernised and is a vast improvement, the others need to be modernised too), the restaurant on-site (in my opinion over-priced and not particularly inspiring) and the pool area (too small, not enough sunbeds but then again I never go there to sit by the pool, prefer the beach). But I am willing to overlook the short-comings and will return next year as the main draw for me is the beach, particularly the Cote Sauvage.

I have never looked at ACSI or Zoover reviews so will have a look now.

Another vote for Atlantique Foret here (no pool tho' or entertainment, or bar) but we liked that. Yes, the sea can be (very) rough and even at knee height cross-currents knocked me over but... there are calmer sections and the area around St Palais sur Mer on the estuary is calmer for young ones... just rather busier. We cycled around quite a bit to avoid the traffic and only ventured to Royan proper for one day: it's worth a visit though for the marina and an almost riviera feel).

There are lots of cycle paths through the forest and all around the coast towards Royan. I really enjoyed that.

We did find a naturist beach and decided well, if in Rome, do as the Romans do. We had acres of beach all to ourselves bar two pink distant figures. I loved it and felt like a carefree child again.

I liked the area and would happily go back.
