Like you our first ever camping trip to France was to the Dordogne, and then the west coast (two centre holiday). But unlike you we decided to go further south for the next holiday as we found that our son travelled better than we imagined, so we went to what became our favourite area - the Gorges du Tarn, Jonte and Dourbie - and we stayed at Val de Cantobre, which also became a favourite campsite. We went back many times over the course of twenty seven years, not every year, but when we had a hankering for the area, and only stopping when the owners, who had become friends, sold the site. Sometimes we just stayed a few days, but if the weather was warm we might stay for two weeks.
It's a beautiful area, spectacular scenery, wildlife, and wonderful things to do and see around every corner. There are mediaeval villages, lovely rivers and gorges, vultures flying overhead from the reintroduction centre in the Gorges du Jonte, flower filled verges, and good value places to have a meal. Sometimes it's worth going further south to be more sure of the weather and we still find ourselves drawn back to that area. So personally I would say that the best area for camping in France in July and August would be the Gorges du Tarn. One other advantage is that though a beautiful area, it's nothing like as crowded as the Dordogne even in peak season.
Those first two holidays set the scene for what was to become a love affair with France and we've been back to France every year for the past thirty four years!
