Thanks Paul, I have looked at that one. I love the size of the pitches. Where did you get the ferry to and can you remember how long it took you to get to the site.
Thanks
We got the ferry from dover, took the toll road to Le Mans and pitched for one night at beumont sur sarthe, this took us about 4/1/2 hours with pit stops along. The way.then on the return leg we drove north and checked into a b&b near mont st Michel,if I ever go back ill be getting the brittany ferries from Portsmouth to either caen or st malo as this only leaves about four hours driving on the other Side and you do it all in a day rather than two.for us being in tents it was a bit of a chore on the way and my boys were only 5 and 4.the debate always comes up on here about western crossings vs dover,I see your in Wiltshire so Portsmouth isn't too bad it all depends how much you want to spend on the crossing and how long you have on your side to travel.rcn was a lovely site, well kept with good facilities at a good price, nights were quiet with a few drinks up the bar or wine and BBQ on the pitch they do a kids hour which is fun and a night time swim, loads going in the area and everything is only a short drive away,go for it you'll love it
We do Portsmouth to St Malo on the way out and Cean to Portsmouth on the way back with Brittany, certainly an easy drive to Le Pin Parasol both ways

I must admit as we were driving home I kept seeing signs for caen,Cherbourg and I was gutted I wasn't getting on a ferry there home but we enjoyed ourselves and learnt a lot, definately western crossings next time
On the way up to Caen last year I intended to stop a couple of times en-route for a quick comfort break. The roads are so good in France we arrived at the port before even thinking about stopping for a stretch and to shake the potholes out of the bones!

Thanks for the info guys. We have done Portsmouth-Caen before but it's just sooooo expensive. However with the kids and a caravan I think that's the best way to go rather than travelling for hours and hours. We could do a stopover though I guess. I need to actually spend some proper time this weekend researching itL
Dover Calais is great but then you have a massive drive the other side if going to Brittany and Vendee. Personally if driving that far I would rather be going to the South of France where everything is warmer and sunnier!
Portsmouth Caen/St Malo are perfect crossings but you do pay a premium.
We did the drive from Dover to the vendees last year and it is a long old drive. Ok going via Caen is pricier but not too much more when you look at toll and fuel savings. If you add on an overnight stop at another site that's extra too.
We went back via Caen and it was a lot easier and the premium well worth paying for.
The exchange rate is very good this year so costs will be lower once in France anyway.
Also bear in mind you won't be paying little things like parking fees at the beach and the roads are a dream with little traffic so fuel savings too oh and the cost of fuel is very cheap.
