I don't think it's always cheaper to book direct if you're looking at big expensive sites in peak season. In fact it can sometimes be cheaper to go pre-pitched than take your own kit. We did Duinrell that way once, in a July.
eg The first time we went to Les Alicourts we booked direct. However the family on the next pitch had booked with Eurocamp Independent, and had paid less than us, again a July trip.
We tend to shop around, including getting "direct" costs. We've left the C&CC because we didn't feel the membership was worth it.
