It is silly to scoff at the payment of tolls if you are not prepared to think it through.
After years of avoiding Paris and going the Rouen route, this year we went via Paris.
Because of arthritis and thrombosis, it is uncomfortable for us to go more than 2 hours at time and more than 200 miles (320 km) in a day. So on a trip Dunkerque to Olivet, we would .normally stopover around Rouen.
Using the autoroute and going via Paris, Olivet was reached in the day. Because of the steady speed on the motorway the fuel consumption was better, and not having the speed humps and round abouts to aggravate knee injuries, far more comfortable.
We have the advantage of a Silver Caravan which is specifically designed to be 1.98m high so is classified as classe 1 for tolls
Comparison Dunkerque to Olivet
(using ViaMichelin, fuel at 1.20 euro/lit)
Using A1 via Paris 425 km Time 4hours 32mins
Fuel consumption (40.3 mpg) = 30.3litres = 36.36 euro
Tolls = 26.40
Total = 62.76
Via Rouen – no toll 476km Time 5hours36mins
Fuel consumption (33.1 mpg)= 38.9litres = 46.68 euro
Overnightstop = 16.00
Total = 62.68
So, in our specific case, we get to the campsite faster (1hour 4mins), fresher and have gained a day's holiday at a cost of 8 cents.
Thus to quote others on here..it is a no brainer and only if you are made of money and costs don't matter,should you go the non toll route.
