Not True the longest caravan legal in England is 8 metres shipping length. As ours is Elddis Storm Twin Axle a
Which is towed easily and legally by Kia Sorento XS which is not 3.5 tonnes.

You are perhaps thinking of a wider van 2.55 mts. as they have in Europe which has to be towed by a larger vehicle.

Both of you are sort of right and a bit wrong Wendy is right as she refers to the maximum body length for towing the maximum length at 7 metres but its not the same as actual length which is what DiPhil refers to this is maximum 8 metres and now includes the draw bar and coupling   In the Uk now its also acceptable to tow a van 2.55 metres wide with a non commercial vehicle
A touring caravan with:
» with a maximum laden weight not exceeding 3,500 kg
» overall width not exceeding 2.55 metres
» overall body length not exceeding 7 metres (excluding drawbar and coupling)
is the maximum size that can be legally towed by a motor vehicle whose maximum gross vehicle weight is less than 3,500 kg

I've just signed up with Drive24-7. Only cost £59.99 which is brilliant for a 30 year old VW campervan (most won't touch me), they get really good reviews as well.

We use QDOS to cover car and caravan. They are reasonably priced and in the top ten  review wise.

We went with Britannia Rescue in the end. They cover caravans up to 8 metres long as standard and as we are CSMA members it's very good value.

Not sure if I can upload this photo correctly, but the legal maximum body length for towing with a vehicle less than 3.5 tonne in the UK is 7 metres. The photo is a screenshot from the gov.uk website.

So, I can't upload the photo, but here's the link to the page

Yes that's body length it does not include the A frame draw bar its the length of the body eg from gas locker to rear so the whole caravan is say 7.99 meters with draw bar The government website is a bit misleading or wrote by some fool who doesn't know the construction and use rules so has been a bit lacking in content.

No good for a caravan (we used Red Pennant when we had a caravan) but covers car + trailer.
