No idea! Didn't understand it and it was over so quick!😁

I think most people recognise the usual prompts like 'retirez card' etc, so if you ever see anything you don't understand query it with the cashier.

But thanks, Helen . Your warning is helpful and I didn't mean to sound critical

It's usually the retailer who manages to get you to pay in pounds. I was caught once during my latest holiday. After I had put my PIN in I gave the machine back to the cashier and they changed it to pounds. It was then too late to do anything about it. After that I kept hold of the machine to make sure that I paid in euros.
It is not an issue with many retailers as there is no other option but to pay in euros.
If you have a card that does not attract charges abroad it's always better to pay in the local currency.

I wonder if it doesn't happen if you regularly use your card in France, and therefore are used to the on-screen instructions. I have never seen anything asking me in English, or French, whether I wish to pay in pounds or euros.

When it does happen to someone, can I suggest they make a note of what comes up on screen and post it on here, so that those who don't wish to pay in sterling can be aware of what to look for?

Brittany Ferries ships definitely operate in two currencies in their on board shops, bars and restaurants - and actually there it's better value to pay in sterling and not in Euros. Contrary isn't it.

Brittany Ferries definitely ask you which currency you would prefer. Easy way would be to take a quick photo of the card machine if anyone sees this message coming up. I will certainly be warning OH who doesn't speak French to get me to check when he pays. If I can get a shot of any wording will post it here wifi permitting as will be in France on Saturday for 2 weeks.

Ah, the joys of living in Ireland and no conversion. Even better that everything is so much cheaper in France.

There will be something on the screen which gives you the price in euros or pounds. If you want a better exchange rate always choose the euro option. As I stated earlier keep the machine in your control until you've paid, otherwise the retailer may automatically change it to pounds as they probably receive more money.
I have used my card regularly in France as well as other countries and it depends on the retailer rather than how regularly you use your card. In some shops the price will always be shown in euros.

Its not just France, we have had this on ATM in Greece, in shops and ATM's in Poland and at a petrol stations in Italy.

On every occasion we have asked for the language to show English. It just offers two prices on the screen and says do you want to pay in GBP or EURO, or in Poland it offers Zloty or GBP etc.

As others have said you have the option of pushing one button or the other so if you chose the English option its very clear (and we find in shops all over Europe when we put our cards it it asks if we want instructions in English the same as on an ATM).
