Went via Poole this year to avoid the south east.
Took two hours longer than all the route planners promised.
Next year Hull.

Went by Plymouth this year. Took 45 minutes to get there from home . Ho ho.

Anyone advise on the best route from the Midlands to theTunnel? We're close to both M6 and M5, and will be travelling overnight for a crossing at 5.50am. Thanks.

M40 then M25 round the S of London then M20 to the tunnel. Should be a piece of cake that time of day - that's why I do overnight for early morning crossings.

HA!... right then...

Returning from Gandspette June 30th AutoRoute solid with lorries. Stayed in the right hand lane being British and "following the rules" to filter right into the Tunnel. After 20 mins and already missed our shuttle. A nice Polish driver said this was the freight queue! doh!

Into the outside lane and got in to the terminal. at 10 a.m. given a 14:30 train time. 36 degrees C in blazing sun. at 13:00 ish smoke seen rising in distance... yep strikers chucked burning tyres on track!! 19:00 get on a shuttle yippee... wrong!

M20 out of Dover going great 3rd or 4th junction up everybody off.... Onto the A20 single carriageway with every lorry in the UK going the other way...

2 hours to go 15 miles. Back on M20/M25 yippee... Over the crossing NO PROBLEM! yay!... Up M11 quiet as anything yes...

A1 closed at Alconbury aaaarrrggghhh!!!....

one diversion later back on the A1 yay!....

A1 closed at Newark!!!!!! One longer diversion later (followed an obviously empty articulated wagon doing at least 70 on the A roads... Not a happy chappy methinks)

Finally got to caravan storage at 01:10 a.m. very nice chap stayed up for us (they shut at 7p.m.)

What an adventure....

I think we have definitely decided to go overnight. Set off about 3am sun morning. 10am crossing, drive until about 2pm then stop over. We can now do any day as just retired. In fact this is day 5 of retirement. Still a bit surreal but loving it. Lovely sunny day here in Saumur and getting hotter towards weekend. Just 39 more days. Yipeeee
