And don't forget that if your dog can pick up ticks, so can you! You can get a tick removing tool from any pharmacy in France...

If you do pick up a tick, and notice any reddening around the bite, in the form of a target with an outer red ring and inner paler rings, then you need to see your GP pronto! All sorts of nasty things can be passed on by ticks.

Buy O'Tom tick hooks before you go from your vet or online - we have them close to hand because Lyme Disease (the red ring referred to is the first sign) is an occupational hazard for my work. But our Cocker is a tick magnet, your Springers will be too. If you're going to Slovenia, they have Tick-borne Encephalitis there, you'd be wise to spray insect repellant on your lower legs if you're out in the countryside. And stay indoors at night near woods in Slovenia as there are bears....

We used Advantix plus the collar on our beardie x in France last year.Walking near Chenonceaux he picked up tics....gross.I carry a tic a tom & used TC P for the bite sites. In Loches the pharmacist recommended spraying his legs with frontline before walking.Apparently this is what the locals do.I was a bit concerned about the amount of chemicals as we also use Advocate as we are in Surrey and heart/ lung worm is on the increase.Tics dislike rose geranium oil and I found a herbal spray mixed with lemon on line.Hope this helps. Our vet also recommended lepto 4 ,as opposed to lepto 2.All a bit worrying really.Hope this helps.

Interesting, we were on Loches, thankfully without problems with our Cockerpoo but he got bitten as a puppy in Scotland once so our vet recommended when in areas where he might be vunerable we supplement usual dosing of Drontal and Advocate with Vectra 3D which is what we do on all trips to France, no problems so far after 4 extended visits over the last 4 summers.

Never used Advantix but might look into the Scalibor collar as we are planning to head to the South of France in 2016

I'm an amateur, but have so far in this thread read about Advocate, Vectra 3D, Advantix, Frontline, Seresta, Drontal and Rose Geranium Oil as well as Scalibor collars. I would still take advice from a professional vet.

Sorry but you will end up paying a small fortune by doing so!

When we lived close to Montignac (Dordogne) our local vet was trying to con us into having each of our dogs vaccinated with a new injection (in addition to all of their other tic treatments) that was believed to give dogs extra resistance to the virus that a very limited few tics carry. The only down side was that it was going to cost us an additional €76 per dog!!!

Please be careful if mixing collars with other treatment
Advocate, Vectra 3D, Advantix, Frontline, Seresta, Drontal, Scalibor collars.
Can contain the same chemicals & it is possible to overdose on them & be careful when trying something new. I have one dog that reacted badly to Advantix.

I hear what you are saying Berriow, as I have gone through looking for the perfect product to protect my furry kids, but next time you are in your vets, try asking him/her about the list of above products, you may be surprised at how little they actually know about them and which would be best for your needs, so always research them yourself too

I actually found a spray called 'no fleas on me' (they do a shampoo version too called 'flea bag', that seemed to help not only my dogs, but us not get bitten by anything on our last trip, so use it on ourselves and the dogs
