I did wonder about my youngest in a canoe?? My older lads can both swim, although the middle one still learning but is 'ok'.

Are you allowed to take two kids out with one adult in a kayak???

You can't take two kids in a kayak but you can take two in a canoe. Lots of choice and lengths of descent - I'd recommend Vitrac down to Beynac or Castnaud as a good first time - lots to see and some places to swim/stop off for a picnic.
We always stay at the same site - only a plain little pool and no slides in sight though so probably not for you.

If you hire a canoe your youngest probably won't be allowed. Certainly in the Ardeche the minimum age allowed in hire canoes is six.

Added two minutes later, that seems to be confirmed, at least on this website:

We've just booked La Bouysse which is nextdoor to Soleil Plage. It doesn't have flumes but is a lot cheaper. I've just started a thread on canoeing - mine are 10 and 16 but I get a bit nervous around water.

We've just booked to go to Le Capeyrou for two weeks during summer link to site...

The site has really good reviews, swimming pool (currently being refurbished), kids park, field for ball games, views of the castle and dordogne! Not much in the way of entertainment but you can walk to a little town and just outside the site is a bar, butchers and bakery. I believe there are plenty of bike routes straight from the site and you can also walk a little way to a river beach and hire canoes. The site is very close to Sarlat.

Our boys are 7 and 11...its our first time going to the dordogne, cant wait!

You'll love it, it's very nicely situated, although not that direct river access like a lot of sites on that stretch of river. Sarlat is I suppose a fifteen minute drive.

Am a bit late to the party here, but we stayed at Chateau Lacomte - http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/details.asp?revid=4954

It was awesome - stunning location and one of the few times in my life I've seen the Milky Way like it looks in pictures, due to no light pollution.

It was very Anglo-centric, which isn't why I go to France, but we loved it. Pool, canoeing - what's not to like...

[edit] so sorry - I think it's adults only! Apols for being both late and stupid!

Chateau Lacomte is a 'love it' or 'hate it' sites, and our friends hated it. They'd met the owners at the NEC show, and liked what they saw. They were to buy an upmarket mobile home, and the site was offering them so they went to have a look. Their reception, on arrival, was not friendly, they didn't like the site at all (except the pool and restaurant), and in the end they only stayed one night - losing a fair amount of money as they'd had to pay in advance.

Carlucet is also a fair way from the river, if you want to canoe - and our friends complained that it was a long way away from anywhere much at all.

There are others on here and other forums who've reported similar experiences - though others love it!!
