Many people will go year on year to a favourite campsite and these tend to book up a year in advance for July and August.
If you have young children I can recommend Camping Moulin de la Geneste near Uzerche in the Limousin. Usually no need to book.

We have a house in the Languedoc, and last year brought our caravan down here in July. We stayed on a site within just a few kilometres of the Med, finding a pitch without a problem.

However, it probably wouldn't be somewhere that you would choose if you had children with you - so if you want to be near the beaches, etc., then I would book.

Bear in mind that in July the weather down here can be very very hot, and make sure you will all cope with the heat.

We hardly ever book ... the joy of camping! Freedom to roam at will , and chase/avoid good/bad weather in all its climactic change variables!

When our children were small we used to go with Eurocamp. Even so, we still ended up with a car full of stuff and the children were packed in with bedding and pillows! A roof box would be useful if you haven't already got one. However, the weather will mostly be good and warmer than the UK, so no need to take loads of wellies and wet or chilly weather gear - although perhaps plastic macs as a stand-by might be useful, as there can be the odd storm. We found an electric cool box handy, both for travelling and for use on site.

Have you thought of the Vendee? Weather is good and there are lots of campsites along the coast with pools and most of them will have kids clubs in the high season. Alternatively, have a look at the south of Brittany. Again, lots of sites and neither is so far to travel. Of the two the Vendee probably gets the better weather, as it is south of the Loire (you can see the line of cloud sitting over it!).

Some very useful ideas in all of these posts. I had not thought of Vendee, and will do some research.

We have thought that, considering the improved weather the kids gear can be kept a minimum. Our ideal is a camp with some modest amenities, very close to the beach.

I think most people have covered everything, kit, practising etc. I do think that if you're travelling with young children then do book in advance. We visited Camping Bel in the Vendee several years in a row. I have provided a review on this site. You haven't said how old your children are but I can tell you that this site is specifically set up for families with younger children, pool on site, 200 metres to SuperU, never go on Sunday morning, and 400 metres from a beach with three others in close proximity. Good luck with it all. And do remember toys. Kids need entertaining if you want to relax!

We love France and go every year. The food and wine are big magnets. We usually book Eurocamp style tents (there are other cheaper companies around) or book direct with campsite. We always look for a good swimming pool (we've stayed with Yelloh previously). It's Dordogne for us this year but we've been to Annecy, Brittany, Normandy and Alsace.

We love our tent and use it more for weekends away in the UK.

We used to take a blow up child's paddling pool for our grandchildren they love it when little as sometimes just handy for them to splash about in when hot Mt daughter sometimes bathed one of them in it as she didn't like showers she was only 1.

We started camping 7 years ago in a tent, and have progressed onto a caravan. We found our perfect site in the Vendee. Far enough into France to get sunshine, most of the time! and not too hot for the children who are now 8 and 9 (1 and 2 when we started going there!). we always get the ferry overnight as we have a 6 hour drive before we get there. Then its 3 and a half hours drive to the Vendee. Amazing beaches and lots of chillout. a good waterpark, go ape type thing that's unbeatable. Keeps us all happy definitely an area worth looking at.
