before AC's were ever invented it was common to hang wet sheets in the doorways and windows of buildings particularly in the states. It wouldn't do any harm to even hang a wet towel in the doorway with a breeze running through it, at no cost it's worth trying anyway?

I have heard of this too! Hang up those wet swimming towels inside then. Must try it.

You can also buy a unit that works on a similar principle. It has a sheet in front that rotates through a trough of water and a fan at the rear. Very lightweight but can make it very humid.
