Why would you not pay a fine if you've done the deed? Why would you not respect the law of the country you're in?

How would you know if the fine is genuine or not as so many scams going around?

BTW even if you had a French Speed database on your Satnav, the police cannot check the Satnav unless they have a court order as you are covered by Data Protection laws.

Checking to see if the satnav has been disabled, as required by French law, is permissible.

Your permission is required if that isn't given then the Public Prosecutor must order it.

Why run the risk when it is so easy to disable?

Is it not just easier to firstly disable the camera alerts (my TT does it automatically anyway, for France, showing the "Danger zones" instead).
Secondly, set satnav to sound an alarm if you do inadvertently go over the limit, whether there is a camera nearby or not!
And thirdly, try to concentrate enough so as your satnav isn't constantly beeping at you!
As said earlier, that might just keep us all a little safer!

I know for a fact, even in the UK, I drive safer when I have satnav on, as it drives me bonkers when it keeps Bing-Bonging at me to slow down!

Opensauce, I owe you an Apology, You are right. But I still can't believe it.   Cheryl and I have researched this today and the 2017 consideration and the other associated legislation are correct as you say.   So, sorry I was wrong. Still can't get my head around it morally though, leaving the fines bit aside,    What is it, 3000 deaths in the UK each year and 8000 in France, plus all the injuries and family misery that goes with it all. Speeding Motorists ????..... food for thought

I don't believe the French are particularly aware of the two second rule, many a time I find them getting far to close looking for an overtake......

It seems regardless of speed the distance between cars is the same. Could be that I am English and deemed as easy pickings.

That's ok. I wasn't suggesting anybody breaks the law. I was just pointing out the facts.

The change from camera warnings to danger zones is useful, it does remind you, which to my mind is a good idea?
My satnav bongs when there is a change of speed limit, I find this very useful as you can miss a sign, especially where there are constant changes from open to 50,40,30!

phathamster, no it's not because you're from UK. I used to think the same when we came on holiday with a UK car, we now live in France and have a French plated car and it's exactly the same. Not been able to find an explanation for it, some of our French friends who are perfectly reasonable in other respects drive in the same manner?

Well Said!
Just because you may be able to get away with not paying does not make it right.
You should abide by, and respect the laws of the country you are visiting, and if you transgress you should pay the fine.
