Well back home now.
Saturday night was awful...again! Neither one of us slept too well with the wind and rain. We packed up mostly on Saturday with just the beds, one table, chairs and one light and the kettle to pack plus odds and sods. We had to be up early as we had to leave by 9:00am to get the ferry. But guess what, it just had to rain and so it did. We were wet through
Whereas when we packed up on the first site we left a chair and table to put all odds and ends on and pack up the rest. No, we had to do it all from the tent. Because the dog had been so traumatised on the ferry and chewed into several things even from his cage, we had to look at what we'd got and rather than pack in a box laying flat we had to do it upright as the back were unchewable and unreachable, so both of these meant we didn't pack as normal.
The tent was so wet, no - absolutely sodden- the water just ran off it. The ground sheet was so mucky and muddy, we just put it into a spare big black bag. The ground underneath, well it looked and felt like cake mixture! Finally we got off, quite sad as it is just a stunning area and I knew we'd miss the mountains and Seb, the beach.
Seb, needed his drugs for the return journey on the ferry, one tablet 2 hours before and 2 1 hour before and the essential oil calming spray that vets give to horses! The journey was long to Dublin and we had a few hiccups on the way so drove right to port .........or did we???!!! Got into Dublin, found the roads and today of all days was the Dublin v Co Mayo match..well...I've never seen so many people. Seas of blue, red and green were all around us for miles and...all the roads were closed or grid locked! We asked police, from the car, where we should go and ended up taking our own route as the ferry crossing was close. Phoned the ferry company ...don't think you'll make it they said. OH, bless him, was getting frustrated (next ferry at 9:00.) We just made it, the titles were saying Last Call..yes, we were the last.
I was agitated as I knew the dog need not only his tablets but a wee. No time. The cars started moving towards the ferry. When they did stop briefly, I went to the dog and shoved a tablet down his neck (still hoping he could at least have a wee, it had been 4.5 hours since his last one)and when it stopped again I'd put another in his mouth. Next time, I got the spray and I think I did it so quick and just sprayed everywhere, I think I got a bit chilled too! The people in the cars next to us were laughing (they obviously knew what we were doing).
The sea was choppy, so the boat was rolling and I kept worrying about the dog. I shouldn't have worried he was glad to see us but really chilled.
We tried to let the dog out at the earliest point we could and... the first service station was closed!!! But Seb, got his wee! We had two major delays back but finally did get home. Where the tent had been in the car, was one big wet patch. Yesterday I had so much washing, but guess what, it rained. The tent is now up in the garden - had to be mopped and it still isn't dry so left it overnight. After all the driving and trauma OH was at work at 6:00p.m. Monday and did through the night until 6:00 this morning and is now on his second 6 til 6 through the night, so he's well tired. I'm off to work tomorrow, but we have got most of the stuff dry now.
Well, there were a few more traumas but I daren't go on and on. Needless to say we did, yes we did have a really good time in an absolutely beautifully stunning area. Would we go again, there were some thing we didn't see because of the dog or the weather, so we'd like to do those but we would probably go to another area.. not as though the weather would be any different.. but there were too many coachloads of people either American or European and each little village has sold itself to tourism, I can't blame them, but each village was the same and tended to sell the same - all aimed at the coachloads of tourists. OH was pleased, I didn't buy anything apart from a necklace each for our girls, oh and I did get an Irish heather plant.
Before starting this I read through it, and to some extent it's been like a little diary of events - mainly wind and rain and spectacular scenery!!!!!!!!!!!
