Hi Di, what I meant was about choice. Fictious example. I'm in Germany in a 1980s VW camper & gearbox locks up, usual story, busted syncro ring, no warning it just happens. Only possible repair is complete box strip & rebuild. Local garage offers to fit recon box for 2k€ which is reasonable but more than I want to pay.
I have a spare gearbox in my garage at home in UK that I can fit myself for no money provided I can get van repatriated instead. So would I be given the choice of repatration if I decided cost of local repair was too high?
This was the point being made in my previous post. It only really concerns owners of older vehicles.
Also can you give me average hourly labour rate charged by provincial non franchised garage in Germany. It would be interesting to have a like for like comparison of garage labour rates UK/Germany to see how much cheaper they are.
Not a caravan person but had ADAC cover for a number of years now. I also have European breakdown cover from the car manufacturer as the car is only 10 months old. As I travel to Europe twice a year for two-three months at the time, UK provided cover is no good as it will only cover me for 90 days annually. About 6 years ago I had a cracked windscreen while in Croatia. Having telephoned my UK breakdown provider, I was told to drive home (1600 miles door to door)and they will see to it then. I contacted ADAC who asked me where the nearest any large dealership was. Gave them the address and was told to contact the garage within 36 hours. On calling the garage second day after ADAC contact, I was told by the garage that the windscreen was with them and ready to be installed. ADAC sent the windscreen part of the way via coach from Munich to Zagreb and via taxi from Zagreb to local garage. There were no transport costs charged to me.
For this sort of service I am happy to follow their rules and continue to be their customer.
I was very glad i'd got my ADAC cover last Thursday when I broke down outside Swadlincote, Derbyshire. Phoned Germany, spoke to a very nice man who got me an AA man out within the hour. Unfortunately, he couldn't get the car going again and I had to wait while they found a flat bed trailer to come and pick my pick up up!
