Thank JandJ - remember this site before, lake looks lovely and sort of thing we are after for main hols, but site probably a bit far north for stopover. We live only an hour or so from Dover so get early ferry so can normally do 300+ miles using autoroutes to leave a shorter second day drive.
Somewhere like that nearer Dijon would be ideal please :)
Lac de Panthier at Vandenesse en Auxois (in the triangle of motorways to the west of Dijon) has a swimming lake with beach, and a nice indoor pool if the weather isn't good. It does do overnight sites, and used to be well used by Eurocamp, Canvas Holidays and others. We haven't been for about four years, but used to use it regularly.
Or Camping Lac de Kir in Dijon itself! Swimming lake access near the site, if not direct access from your caravan!

Hi, we stayed in Annecy for a week with my children in July 2015. I spent ages looking for the 'right' campsite. My kids were 15 and 17 and the 15 year old really likes swimming pools especially with slides.
We chose camping Ideal in the end. It is at the end of the lake, up in Doussard. The paragliders land in a field next door which is great to watch. It was a good price with a good pool, clean facilities, a bar/take away place, entertainment and kids entertainment if you wanted it. Not many Brits, plenty Dutch.
It's a fair walk down to the beach (next to Lac Blue campsite) but mainly traffic free via the bike path. We cycled into Annecy via the path (flat old train line) and actually all around on the road on the other side.(involves quite a hill though). Son and husband had a great time out cycling on the mountain roads. You can get a boat from down on the Lake into Annecy if you prefer. It's a beautiful area.
It's a great place to stay if you are active. High light for my kids was the river canyoning excursion that we paid for them to do. Oh and the fabulous free firework show that the campsite put on!(weekly I think)
I don't want to put you off but the weather can be very changeable. We arrived just after a heat wave when the temperature really dipped. Bikini one day to down jacket another!
Edit to say 15 yr old daughter and husband nearly picked up to courage to leap off the mountain (it's very expensive) and regretted after that they didn't.
Further to the previous post this is the jump off political for the hang gliders with the view towards Annecy. Much as it looked inviting, couldn't pluck up the courage to have a go.
John

Thanks for all the input. La Ravoire it is (hopefully waiting for confirmation). Looks slightly smaller and more suited to us but still has good kids pool and not too far from lake or bike trail
Thanks Val A for the sites aswell I looked ta that one in Dijon - might give that a go, looks right inn the centra!.
Sue.too great info thanks. Hopefully weather will be mainly good but obviously in mountains can vary we know - hoping for a couple of nice loud storms love them!
Hi, I would like to make a "pitch" for lac de chalain in french jura. Absolutely turquoise and both times we have been there hot. Also the gorge du verdon region(haute provence) has some fabulous lakes, also pure turquoise. Lac de sainte croix is the very large artificial lake that this incredible gorge opens into.
I meant to say that on the first Saturday in August you do NOT NOT NOT want to drive anywhere near Annecy. It's their annual firework show which is amazing (and can be viewed a lot of the shore around the lake as long as you can physically SEE where Annecy is. However this weekend the town's traffic grinds to a halt, many roads are closed and there are no parking spaces available whatsoever (any available space has a coach on it.) However the atmosphere there is fab, so if you can cycle in and back along one of the cycle routes it's worthwhile.
We drive to Methon St Bernard around 6pm, have a bbq/picnic on the grass, the kids swim and we watch the fireworks from there
------------- Doing whatever the rice krispies tell me to.

On our way to Annecy we stay at Camping La Plage Blanche. If you google it, their webpage comes up
Is that site owned by Clare, who, together with her ex-husband, used to own Val de Cantobre in Nant (Aveyron)? I see it's just about to join the 'Indigo' brand (or is it now Huttopia?)
Thanks for that. I wonder where she's moved on to now. I know when she split up with Pierre she met the owner or manager of La Plage Blanche and moved there. We used to get Christmas cards and emails but I haven't heard from her for a couple of years and her email address no longer works.
Thanks anyway. If anyone does know where she is these days please let me know.

We've stayed at La Raviore it is a small family run site (or it was when we were there a few years ago!)
Don't miss out on going to La Cluzaz where there is toboggan run down the side of the mountain great fun! And Chamonix to go up Mont Blanc on the train or the cable car.
There's also the caves inside the glacier very interesting and very pretty! I remember taking spectualar photos of a rainbow that was down below us whilst we were up in the mountains
Hair raising roads too - hope none of you get travel sick!

Lac de Chalain is a beautiful place too, that was our first venture with my own family into France, having been so many times all over France with my parents 9in a caravan of course)
Annecy is amazing, I'm sure you'll have a fab time. We're going for the 4th time in 6 years this year. We always drive up Semnoz and do the luge and the other activities there. Great fun for kids and adults alike. The cycle path will take you all the way into Annecy and also have a look at cycling to the beach at St Jorioz.
The weather has always been kind to us in August. Can be very hot and always 1 day of rain per week! Enjoy
